I think we all agree the RP was marketed as a product for mass. It was targeted to be the best selling product. With this camera, Canon gave the opportunity to join the FF experience to almost every average consumer. Following a similar strategy like the original 6D in the past (entry-level FF).
Do you think RP sales will blow up in the upcoming years, like again the 6D?
By various reports/rumors the RP, like the R, is bit of a stopgap. The word is they are going to do an "RP-Minus" and get the price down and then an "RP-plus" with some more features. They need a camera for people starting into full-frame mirrorless. It needs to be good enough that people have a good experience and start buying lenses.
The RP worked for me. I was debating about the R6 but when they came out with an RP+24-240 for $1,200, I decided to get my feet wet. The IMO grossly underrated 24-240 in combination with the RP convinced me to start buying more lenses (so far RF 15-35F2.8, RF85f2, and RF50f1.8). So thanks to the "deal" on the RP and lens, Canon shook loose several thousand more dollars.
The RP is serving its place in helping me figure out what I want in a higher-end body. I'm kind of leaning toward the rumored R5s (higher resolution) rather than an R6 or RP-plus.
Everyone is going to be different. The dedicated cameras have to offer images people can't get from cell phone cameras. At the same time, the camera companies need to get people "hooked" with cameras and lenses that are not too expensive to start out.
