Galaxy Tab S7+ vs M1 Macbook Air

My 2012 Samsung 10.1 tablet delaminated for the 4th time. I'm sick of gluing it. My wife used up all the glue on purpose. So I'm in the market for a new device. Out of curiosity, I wonder if M1 Macbook Air is a better value? S7+ versus M1 Air:

  • $732 vs $999
  • screen 12.4" vs 13.3"
  • pixels 2800x1752 vs 2560x1600
  • memory 6GB vs 8GB
  • storage 128GB vs 256GB
  • weight 2 vs 2.8 pounds
  • microSD slot vs none
  • none vs laptop keyboard

Think it's worth $267 more? I'll have to check out whether there are replacement applications for my tablet apps on Android.

They are different things, Tablet vs Laptop. If I was in your situation I would first assess if it suits you to replace a table with a laptop, and then decide what model to buy. This would be based on your needs.

Specs why it would be different to compare as both devices have different requirements to run, so better "numbers" in one may not translate in better performance.

Having said that, I don't think you can go wrong with either.

Keeping the predecessor device for nearly a decade suggests that - annualized over the time of use - the incremental difference in prices will probably be a negligible pittance. The intended personal use(s) and the different aptitudes of a tablet versus laptop format (as well as how those complement other old and new devices you own) seem like much more important things to think about.

I'm a heavy Android tablet user, but it's all ereading, web browsing and audio/video media play, and not ... sit down photo editing, office suite work, online shopping and financial stuff on desktop or laptop, or communications, geolocation and camera on the smartphone. More formed habits than necessity - much of it's interchangeable.

A possible but currently theoretical advantage is that an iPad App in the future could be run on the Mac. So far very  few iPad apps can run on the Mac.

Thanks for the advice.

Google Chrome is available for Apple silicon. I can run Hulu+ and Netflix in Chrome. So I ordered an M1 Macbook Air.

It would be nice if it were a 3-in-1 model like the HP Spectre x360, but it's not. The industry calls these 2-in-1 but they're really 3-in-1: tent, laptop, or tablet.

My wife will probably buy an S7+ when her 12" tablet dies.

My wife gave me a Kindle Paperwhite for my birthday. When reading text, it is much easier on the eyes than a tablet, though it lacks color. I had stopped using a tablet for e-reading.

I believe I'll be able to connect the Macbook Air to my 4K monitor, and benchmarks indicate that the GPU is faster than the GTX 1050 in my laptop. I hope to run DxO Photolab on it.

Yeah, I have a phone so the tablet seemed superfluous.
