G9 too big?
14

I haven’t posted in a LONG time but recently purchased a Penny G9. Before this I owned a GX7, a Canon 20d and an Olympus E10. (And a bunch of 35mm gear.)
I shoot a fair amount of photo/video for my profession which includes Canon, Nikon and Sony gear including Fs7s, Fs700s and an A7iii. What specifically drew me to the G9 for my personal use was the 10 bit FW upgrade, body and compatibility with the lenses I own.
Since I didn’t have any local stores to try and buy a G9, I bought it sight unseen.  Like many people, I was worried it would be too big. (The closest I got was handling an Olympus Em1 a few years back.)

Boy was I was wrong about the size.

It’s not too big for me at least. I think it’s just right. I love the handling on my GX7 for vacations and a night out  However it soon feels “fiddly” especially if I’m wearing gloves.

I honestly think the EM1 and G9 are an ideal size for handling, even if they are called “too big” by the M43 haters. I’m not a big guy by any stretch at 5’8” and 130 lbs but maybe I have freakishly large hands.😉 If you’re worried these “big” bodies are too big, well, they ARE bigger than Pen and GX series. However, if you have adult-sized hands and like a camera that fills out your grip, don’t be spooked by comments of “too big.”

If you’re new to the M43world, remember you’ve bought into a SYSTEM and not just a camera. My GX7 isn’t going anywhere, when I want smaller and lighter body, that’s what I’ll grab. When I need weather sealing, great 4K video and better handling, I’ve got that covered with my G9. THAT is the beauty of this system.

I’ve used some very nice and VERY expensive photo/video gear throughout my career. However, I chose M43 because it makes me want to go out and shoot and isn’t that what it’s all about?

Re: G9 too big?

It's just as big as a Z6, but has more features.

I would rather a Z6 and have, but everytime I go to Adorama or B&H, I pick one up and play with it, as I'm used to the menu.

I am indeed a long M43 user since G1.

I was very happy with the size of GX1, a reason I stick with M43: size, lens support, cost and IQ acceptable to me. If not because of the size, I would go for my long using Nikon dslr.

GX7 and GX85 are already on the large side of what a M43 should mean to me. Since I have all the upgrades like 4K and IBIS etc, just try to love them.

Bought G85, oop, it takes up the same space I need for the nude bodies of a GX7 + GX85 inside my camera bag!

G9? I don't need its AF tracking power, so no, thanks. It is too big to me. BTW I am 5'11" and 220lb, wearing L size (UK size) glove.

Similarly to the GMs, they are too small to me too, I once want to buy one as my backup, eventually give up the idea.

So, it is a personally preference.

Re: G9 too big?

the G9 is PERFECT!  I also have a Z5, a very nice camera, but it doesn't do SooC colors like the panasonic (for mixed artificial lighting - night city-scapes) and the hi-rez files from G9 are better.  I know, there are limitations w/ Pixel-shift, but for most of what i do they work great!

I will be selling the Z5 and hopefully replace w/ S5

Keep it fun!

I've found that the size and the overall ergonomics of G9 work fantastically for me when using larger lenses such as the PL100-400. This is also the lens with which I mostly use the camera.

For more general photo outings with smaller lenses I tend to prefer to use a smaller body.

It all depends

I'm female, and while I am tall (5' 8"), I have very small hands.  I found the G9 grip quite uncomfortably deep, and because of that it gave me wrist and elbow pain.  As a result, I did not end up with one.

Of course, this is not the first camera body that has ergonomically not agreed with me, so my point is that there are no "too big" or "too small" bodies that you can make a 100% generalization like that about.   Lots of people adore the G9, as it fits their hands and ergo needs exceptionally well.  A few, no, (I am one).  You are lucky enough to be one of the folks who it works for.

Re: It all depends

You make some great points. So much if this is what works for us users. That’s what I liked about the GX7 - it wasn’t too small enough for my hands. I tried a friend’s Gx85 and found the size/grip too diminutive for me.

With that said the G9 is definitely more noticeable and seems to draw more attention, unlike “consumer” looking cameras.

The G9 is the largest non gripped M4/3 camera and big when compared to many others. Why is it "soft" to not want a camera that is uncomfortable to use?

What an idiotic remark to make.

I think you had better go & check sizes of other m4/3 before making remarks like that.

Such as?

I'm counting the M1X as gripped due to its design

Lol. Special dispensation because it's an Olympus right. Isn't the GH5 & a little bit bigger than the G9? I know for sure it's heavier, & the ergo's aren't quite as nice.

Seconded Re: G9 too big?

I resisted the G9,: too expensive and too big. An excellent offer price tempted me in March this year. Wow, with 100-400mm, sometimes 8-18mm, the combination is perfect for me - hands are medium sized.  I still have my G80s and they continue to be very good but the extra controls and features of the G9 represent a big step up, especially for wildlife.

I shoot very little video but am aware the G9 offers great functionality that I can take up at some point in the future.

As the G9 has been around a year or three, prices have dropped and are good value. As always, t is worth watching out for special offers.

Exactly

Maybe with the GH5, will have a look.

I have a G9 so no bias there, but for instance my daughter has small hands and would find it uncomfortable to use. Not soft, just sensible especially if it would ut someone off from going out and taking photos.

Similar to me when I was lugging about a 5DMk2 and lenses, main reason I went for something smaller and lighter. saying that the G9 and 12-100 does weigh a bit, but also have a GX9 and 15/1.7 for wandering around town.

Depends on target glass ------>
3

It depends on the glass you want to use ..... if you`re after using small primes then maybe an EM10-4 or GX9 would be better suited, likewise I can`t think of a better camera sizewise for the 12-32 pancake than its original kit camera the GM1 but if you`re using lenses the size of the 12-60 F3.5-5.6 or larger , the G9 isn`t large in the least (I found it overwhelmed the GX9 , more suited to a GX8 or G80 at smallest) , in fact due to the G9 + 12-60 being feather light compared to APS_C DSLR setups like the Nikon D7200 , a very light rig indeed .. for use with lenses which are moving towards large like the 100-400 , Oly 12-100 Pro etc , a cam the size of the G9 and EM1-II is IMO essential, and yes I did use the 12-40 PRO on a GM5 ------- ONCE .

BTW for the record, I`m a skinny 5'10", built like a woman and with "pianists" hands too so not exactly a bear with sausages for fingers and I run around all day with FF rigs for work , have done since when cameras actually WERE heavy and ungainly (try a 1DS MK1 & 2 + Ls - the D850 rig is a feather after that - a G9 or EM1-II + 12-60 comically light) I can understand hand sizes and fat grips, even the larger GH5 has less grip girth , my long fingers help I guess.,

Size comparison as a bit of reality check - remember that the D850 is far from the largest DSLR

D850 - RX10-III - G9 - G5

Note the heavyweight (nearly a Kilo) Sigma 24-105 F4 ART on the D850 bulking it up and that the RX10-III is actually bigger than the G9 (feels heavier too) , the G5 on the end is the smallest G series body with a proper grip

I prefer the worst new camera of 2020
3

I had a G9 for around a year, with decent f2.8 lenses. Too big for me?

I'll now only buy a camera with a swiveling screen (just personal preference) so when Canon brought out swivel screen FF cameras, I eventually bought the lightweight RP with an RF 12-105 f4 lens. I added an EF 16-35 f4 plus adapter

IQ between the two cameras wasn't too different. The latest 20 mp M43 sensor looks to me to give more analogue and less digital images than the 16 mp versions, but even so, I preferred the Canon images. I could get the G9 images very similar, but it took more PP time to do so. So sold the G9 and nearly all the M43 lenses.

I've always thought those complaining about FF weight are wimps. But either modern FF lenses are much heavier, or the ten years since I last carried them up hills have taken their toll, because grinding up some of the long hills around here, the RP with two decent f4 lenses feels like a big bag of heavy rocks.

Was the G9 plus lenses lighter than the RP and equivalent lenses? Yes. But for me, still a halfway house.

So when it came out, I bought the worst new camera of 2020, the G100. Jacket pocket size, 20mp sensor IQ and the tiny but remarkably good 12 -32 lens. I still had the little collapsible Oly 9-18 and I've just ordered the collapsible Panny 35-100 f4-5.6. I've had excellent results from the first two, and have high expectations of the third.

So a compact lightweight camera with swivel screen and three very compact, very lightweight lenses. I'm back where M43 plays to its strengths (for me); compact, light and IQ close enough to the best for most purposes. And I have the Canon for when I want it.

Of course, it's a system that suits me but not everyone. I never use video, don't attempt BIF or fast moving stuff like sports. Just landscapes, townscapes and opportunistic shots.

As someone on this forum points out, you don't get opportunistic shots from the camera you leave at home.

There are no rights or wrongs in this game, just what suits each individual and what doesn't.

Both Panasonic and DPR screwed up there ....... Pan because they market the thing for a job it wasn`t suited for (V-Logging) whereas if they`d swapped the silly audio system for an IBIS unit and marketed it as a small stills camera at a lower price it`d have been received far better ........... DPR because they couldn`t seem to see past the marketing and appreciate what it does do well - a small Stills camera in a better handling format than the GX80/9
