Thats what I was figuring too as mine was pretty dang quick on the 70d.

I was surprised to see how much the price has gone up on the 55-250stm. I mean you could get one for $120 at anytime a few years back

I bought mine used for $125 a few years ago.

My impression of the 55-250 STM was that it was in the same range as the 10-18 STM, around $275. But they are so inexpensive and plentiful that used and refurbs can often be found for half that price. I picked up an STM version on a Black Friday sale about four years ago for $109. Then last year a second copy (my wife and I both enjoy it for travel) with a Canon refurb kit that included an 80D, 55-250 and 18-55 for just $672. (At that price, the lens seems virtually free.) I suspect that they are so plentiful because they are excellent starter lenses that likely often serve as a stepping stone for future L glass buyers. Someone who just bought a 100-400 L or 70-200 L and isn't worried about size has little need for their previous 55-250.

It is but when it came out you could get new gray market lenses for $119 with free shipping. They were plentiful at that price. Now the cheapest l see is $199

Well about 4 years ago I gave my daughter my 70d and all my lenses. My most used lens was the 55-250 stm. Super sharp and good colors with quick auto focus. Only complaint was wishing it had a little more reach.

So l got myself a 90D for Christmas with the 18-135 usm nano lens. I would say its optically the same as my old 18-135 stm but much much fast auto focus which is very nice. Anyways back to the topic l am looking at getting a zoom and trying to decide if l should get the stm again or try the 70-300 usm is ii with its super fast auto focus.

So does the 70-300 have as good color, contrast, and sharpness as the 55-250? Is it worth the twice the price?

Any insite would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

How much reach do you need? As an outside option just worth mentioning, I’ve loved my Tamron 100-400, and I know the sigma is also reviewed very well. May be overkill, but just a thought. It depends how often you lack reach and what you are shooting.  I also have the 55-250 IS STM and love it, it just lacks contrast and ultimate IQ compared to the Tamron.

Got this in this afternoon.  Weather is crappy right now but l have been playing with it. The auto focus is slightly slower than the 18-135 nano usm but l believe it will be more than fast enough for my use.

Got it from Walmart online. So it was as cheap as it was because its apparently an international version.  Guess im going to have to be extra careful with it.

One of the rules of life I think, the weather is always crappy when you get a new camera or lens to play with.

Is that the 100-400? I adore mine. The IQ will impress you, much sharper and better contrast then the 55-250.

Yes its the 100-400.  Above 135mm the lens is very sharp with great contrast. It improves by a decent amount above 135mm. At 100 through 135 my 18-135 usm nano is sharper and has better contrast. Was a little surprised about this.

Going to set up a few more test to make sure its not me

What is you opinion of the 18-135?  I've been hesitant to get a long throw lens.  Some of the reviews suggest it is soft at various FLs.

Very fast and accurate auto focus and my copy is sharp with good contrast. I cant complain about it at all.

So i did a few tests at 15ft and about 5 and a half feet. Well the focal lengths dont line up. 135 on the tamron is much closer than the 135 on the canon. Tested at the tamrons 100mm and the canons 135mm and matching frame with the other lens. The canon beats it in sharpness and contrast. And thats with the tamron stopped down to 5.6 to match the canon. I even added more light to the area to see if that would change it but nope the canon produces a better picture. The sharpness is close but the contrast difference is very noticeable.

Now 200mm on the tamron its razer sharp with great contrast.

I dont know if i got a bad copy of the tamron but man this thing is just awful when zoomed it. Its not the sharpest nor does it have good contrast.  My 18-135 annihilated the tamron

Looks like the best answer is "Get Both".

At less than $200 on sale (watch Amazon) it's a no-brainer to always have a 55-250STM available.

That's sad to hear.

I had a similar experience with the Sigma 100-400C.  After waiting and researching, I bought one new.  I was extremely disappointed.  I must have had a bad copy, but it was very soft and poor contrast as well.  I tried everything and used the USB dock, but it was very disappointing.

I was very happy with my Canon 70-300 II, and of course am extremely happy with my Canon 100-400L II.  Hopefully it's just a bad copy and you can exchange it.  I had the same experience with my 100-400L.  First copy had serious focus issues and was replaced.  2nd one is perfect.

Hope it works out for you.

I just ordered a lightly used canon 100-400 mark ii. I returned the tamron. I am going to pick up the 55-250 stm as soon as l can. Have to recover from the 100-400L first though.

Noticeably better in AF and IQ than the 55-250 that I previously owned. AF is blazing fast. Here is a backyard photo taken with it and the old original 7D

Wow! This picture is amazing. This gives me the answer that it is not going to be the lens stopping me from taking great pictures.

Thanks.  I love this lens for a lighter walkaround telephoto.  I have used it with the 7D and 7DII for wildlife and sports.  The only reason I don't use it even more is that I have the Canon 100-400L
