Canon 200D or 100D with Magic Lantern?

Hello fellow photographers,

I was wondering if anyone could opine on this idea of mine. I'm thinking of selling my 200D (which I bought second hand cheap) to instead get a 100D and use it with Magic Lantern, especially with the hack's ETTR to the right and dual iso functions.

Some reasons for this: - the 100D is cheaper than the 200D - it's even a bit smaller than the 200D - apart from the sensor, battery and LV AF, the two cameras are technically almost identical to me (I wouldn't be missing the 200D's tilting screen).

But more to the point, my 200D's dynamic range is a bit schitzo: it's huge at iso 100, which I love, and pretty poor after iso 1600, which I find surprisingly disappointing after 6 PM in winter (by the way DXO Lab scores confirm this steep DR cline). I don't think the HTP function is a suitable workaround because it adds too much noise at high isos, which is precisely where it could really come in handy DR-wise!

So I'm thinking that with the 100D in dual iso mode, that older camera could actually do better than the 200D (for which ML is not available). Also, 18mpixels is totally plenty for me and from what I'm seeing at 100%, most consumer grade EF and EF-S lenses can't keep up with the newer 24mp chip (mine at least)!

As a side note I do photography as a hobby, I'm not into video at all, I mostly take shots while walking around the countryside, nothing very demanding. And I like to adapt and hack things. I mainly use the 18-55 STM, the EF 28mm 2.8, and the EF 50mm 1.8. I've also adapted a Tamron 52B (90mm 2.5), which is oh-so-delightful on the 200D.

Looking forward to reading from any happy/disappointed 100D/ 200D owners and Magic Lantern aficionados.

A very merry Christmas to all!

Seb

Unless ML offers you something you can't live without, the 200D is the better choice in about every measure. Live view shooting is much better, the sensor is better, it has a better processor, the tilt screen is very useful etc. I have owned the 200D for 2.5 years and it just gets the job done for me as a small, lightweight camera. Also, I don't see where the EF-S lenses aren't up to the demands of the 24mp sensor. I use the EF-S 10-18mm, 17-55mm, 18-55mm f/4.0-5.6, 55-250mm and the 15-85mm. They all deliver plenty of sharpness for a 24mp sensor.

IMO, the 200D is the easy choice compared to the 100D with the only up side for the 100D is it can use ML.

Get the 200D, the sensor is excellent and it's a nice fast little camera. I use mine a lot with the ef-s 60mm macro and it's very sharp detailed image.
