Will older models never get newer film simulations with firmware updates?

I was watching this video about why older models are still great cameras. They mentioned that the X-T2, I believe does, not have Acros which is kind of a dealbreaker. I don't expect an X100s to get Eterna Bleach Bypass, but it would be nice if at least the last model gets the new models film simulations. So basically my question is are film simulations never added with firmware updates?

Change the model name to X-T4 with exlfgui and the raw file will give you all the film simulations in Capture One.

The X-T2 has Acros, but to your question Fuji usually doesn't give older cameras the newer film sims.

Ahh my mistake. It must have been the X-T1 that he said was a no go on account of the lack of Acros. So yea, it's possible but not likely that my X100v will ever Eterna Bleach Bypass?

I don’t see how the lack of a film sim can be a dealbreaker.  What if Fuji had never created the Acros sim?  Would you be saying dealbreaker unless Fuji creates Acros?  It’s a good thing Fuji created Acros or no one would be buying their cameras.

I doubt it. Fuji hardly ever updates the X100 cameras.

This is about the desire for a feature; which can be a film sim, a tilt screen, eye detect, good AF tracking, or even IBIS. If that's something you really want, then not having it can be a deal breaker.

Yea, I wouldn't buy any used model which doesn't have Acros. I pretty much exclusively use Acros and Classic Negative.

Oh well, I'm pretty happy with Acros and Classic Negative.

Well no one knows for sure. The X-Trans IV cameras will probably get Bleach Bypass and the new film sim though. If you really want some of these sims, you can always follow the instructions in this video.

It’s a safe bet these days that the only film sims you get are those that are in the camera when you buy it.

Despite it often being a widespread expectation when new film sims appear, Fuji have literally only ever updated older cameras with a new film sim once - some years ago, when they introduced the very first “new” sim Classic Chrome. That was released on one of the X-Trans II cameras (I forget which) and a number of others then received it via firmware, but only those X-Trans II models - the first gen X-Pro1 and XE1 never saw it for example.

The next new sim was Acros, announced with the X-Pro2 which also happened to be the first X-Trans III camera, and at that time Fuji specifically explained how the special grain processing in that sim couldn’t be replicated on older hardware so it would never come to older models.

That reasoning kind of made sense at the time, but doesn’t hold for the number of sims since that haven’t been shared by firmware either. For example Eterna was the next new sim announced with the XH1, an X-Trans III camera with the same image processing as the X-Pro2, XT2, XE3 etc, but none of those older cameras got it. Similarly Classic Neg was released on the X-Pro3 but never shared with the internally identical XT3, and now it’s the same with Eterna Bleach Bypass on the XT4. At this point the pattern is pretty well established, to get the new sim you need a new camera.

This is a cool trick, but the main reason some of us like fuji jpegs is to avoid sitting behind a computer and post processing.

I do still do this for certain shots, but basically do all in camera now with fuji jpg.

I’ll probably pony up for a new xe 4 next year so hopefully it has all the current sims and then some.

Classic Chrome was added to the X-T1 with fw-update 3.00.

Now that Fuji models have Acros I can see not wanting to buy a Fuji camera without it when there's a model available that has it.

However, I still sort of stand by my original comments.  Some of the things that become "deal breakers" are silly in my mind.  Again, what if Fuji had never created Acros film sim.  What would you be doing?  Not use any camera at all?

This.

And given the most recent (huge) X-T3 update that lacked Classic Neg, I have zero hope for this to ever happen again.

From a developer's point-of-view, it's probably very had to incorporate newer film sims into older bodies, and impossible to properly calibrate new film sims to an older sensor.

I can see why Fuji chooses to spend their R&D dollars on autofocus instead.

Into older bodies (with older sensors that is, right), probably, just that X-T3 is still not an "older" body on that account, having the very same sensor/processor as X-Pro3 and X-T4, at least, so the price of "porting" should be much lower (there still is some price, as software moves on, and backporting some new functionality might require rewrites in other parts of the code, too, making the whole change more complicated).
