I have just upgraded from an EOS1300D to an EOS750D specifically to be able to use an external microphone for video.

The camera is recording sound fine with the in-built mic, but when I plug in the external mic (a lavalier type lapel microphone) it won't record a thing!

I know the mic works, as I've tried it with my laptop.

Any advice?

EDIT: I discovered the reason. The microphone has a TRRS plug and the camera only accepts the TRS plug (I didn't even know there was a difference!)

Fortunately, you can just buy a TRRS (female) to TRS (male) adapter. Problem solved. :-)

Yes, that will do it!

For future reference (and maybe for others reading this), the fact that your mic was TRRS tells us it was designed to be used with mobile phones (and some laptops). Standard lav mics will normally be TRS (for stereo) or TS (for mono). If you're not going to use a mic on multiple device types, it's best to buy one that matches your device - the less connections the better.

yes, it seems so! I assumed a jack plug was a jack plug and had no idea I was buying a mic that wouldn't work in a camera!
