I'd like to mount a nato rail on my sigma fp

I have the rail but double sided carpet tape doesn't seem strong enough.  Any ideas on how else to mount a nato rail or cold shoe to the top (flat surface) of the camera.  Gorilla and Scotch and 3M all have stronger products but I' not sure how removable they are.  I also have some very narrow 3m trip tape but lately it seems to be allowing taped items to slide around.  Cold weather may be part of my problem.

Any ideas or suggestions as to stronger bonding tapes that will still be removable?  This is on an anodized magnesium IIRC surface.

thanks,

Mike

Is there a hot shoe?

There are lots of NATO rail hot shoe adapters.

Re: I'd like to mount a nato rail on my sigma fp

There is one on an attachment at the far left of the camera:

My goal was to add one to keep a 5" atomos monitor centered without the overhead of a cage. I use the camera for photography not video, Unfortunately the sigma fp has no moveable lcd so shots from low angles are much more difficult.

Putting a cage on the camera adds a lot of bulk and there are no arca-swiss compatible rails on the bottom of the cages so that adds yet another layer of bulk to the package.

As usual kiss ("keep it simple stupid") is far from kiss in the end.

Here is what I'm trying to mount:

which fits nicely between the cine-still button and the movie button on the top of the camera. It's the shortest rail I could find and anything longer won't work for this application.

This shoe mounted rail might do. It looks like the shoe fitting could be moved to the end of the rail and it would then extend horizontally to nearly the middle of the camera. Not sure if it would obstruct the power, cine-still and movie switches or not but probably not:

Thanks for the suggestion. Uh-oh everyone is out of stock until March.

At this point I'm continuing to look for a stick-on solution but an fp cage may be my last hope.

3D printing or gluing or tape

Well, my standard answer is to 3D-print an appropriate mount.

For example, here's my Adjustable Mechanical Cable Release Adapter for Digital Cameras :

That print is just barely stiff enough in PLA to resist the leverage forces from the release, so you might need to make parts a bit thicker if it is carrying significant load.

Going back to your earlier question about glues: not sure what it would do to a paint job, but using cyanoacrylate (crazy) glue for hard, flat, metal-to-metal bonding works great and is removable using heat. Basically, using a hair dryer to gently heat one part will cause it to expand and break the bond, after which the remaining glue easily can be scraped off. I've done this without leaving any marks on chromed brass and anodized aluminum... although that doesn't promise it will not leave marks in your case.

There are also two-sided tapes that can work. I often use a special two-sided tape that is designed to hold pieces of wood together while turning them on a lathe, etc. It sticks real well to resist sideways movement, but doesn't offer much resistance to separating the two pieces by pulling them apart.

Re: 3D printing or gluing or tape

Thanks for the ideas Hank.  I switched over to some double sided 1/8" wide 3M trim tape I use to put magnifier mounts on cameras without viewfinders but with lcd's (Sigma in particular).  It seems to be holding quite well but I wouldn't want to carry the camera holding on to the monitor.

Your shutter device looks like a nicely done project.

Well the weight of the monitor started lifting the adhesive.  I guess I could hand carry it but for the time being I got a top/bottom smallrig cage set on the way.

I would say that the Smallrig cage adds very little bulk. It really is very minimal and light, and it includes a cold shoe. I haven't tried adding a rail, but I am sure it would work. However, there are lots of threaded holes on the top of the rig.

How does the monitor attach ? Is there a male bolt at the bottom to go directly into the hole in the little rail that you illustrate ?

There is now a third-party kit for making the fp LCD tiltable:

Don't have an FP (and don't really want one), but that is a brilliant mod!  That shows a level of engineering competence that I've not seen in many 3rd party mod kits.

Yes, it looks impressive, doesn't it!

I wonder if a version is under consideration for the Pentax K-3 III?

It does, but the Sigma cable release for the fp is superb, and much better than any traditional mechanical release.
