X-E3 LEDs causing LCD & EVF flickering

I’ve done some searching but other’s experience with this only seems to be related to using face detect and DR400, or initial firmware versions.

My XE3 performs perfectly with the exception of when the sensor is exposed to LED lighting.

I am using mechanical shutter only, not using face/eye detect. Am using DR100 (tried all). Firmware is latest v1.30. I’ve done complete resets. I’ve tried various ISO, SS and aperture values as well as a few different lenses.

The flickering is severe. Not present with incandescent, CFD’s or fluorescent lights. My X100V and X-T2 do not have this issue.

Again, the camera works great otherwise. Anyone else experiencing this behavior with their XT3?

It's a documented issue of the Xe3, can you send it back or get it replaced?

Thanks for the reply.

The only things I found documented was when using the camera (with early firmware) with face detect and DR400. Nothing I could find related to my use case.

Unfortunately I'm 7-8 months out of warranty. Not sure it's worth spending a couple hundred $ for repairs when it works great under most conditions. I can just use one of my other X's for photographing Christmas I guess.

I was just curious if there might be a DIY solution for this.

Im interested in a solution as well, i was looking to buy the XE3 but got cold feet due to reports of similar issues. Im sorry for your predicament, and i hope there is indeed a practical (and likely obvious) solution to the problem that we are missing.

If I find a solution I will post it here. Unless you do a lot of indoor shooting with the camera pointed directly at LEDs you'll never notice it.

Re: X-E3 LEDs causing LCD & EVF flickering

Regarding the last sentence in my original post I meant to say XE3, not XT3.

Thanks for the link. I already had my camera setup this way however.

Although unrelated, it doesn't seem wise to swap lenses with the power still on as he say he does in the video.

Re: X-E3 LEDs causing LCD & EVF flickering

It is the nature of LED lights. They flicker at 60 or 50 hertz depending where you live. Older lights are more severe. Newer lights are better.
I have noticed this on all my digital cameras to some degree. I have shot theatrical performances in silent electronic shutter mode and had problems with those lights. One set had a large moon covered in LED rope lights and each frame only showed portions of it to be lit. Only way to have it fully lit was to shoot with shutter at 1/60 or lower which is not ideal.

Is there a way to change the LCD/EVF refresh rates?

Thank you for replying.

This only happens with my XE3, not my X100v or XT2 with same settings.

I’m not aware of a way to change the refresh rate.

My XE-2 EVF did that almost all the time. Had no effect on the output though. I got used to it.
