G3X loses to SX730!!??

Picked up a "Like New" G3X last July. At first it seemed to be taking pretty good pictures. More recently I've had to admit it really should be doing better with a 1" sensor and all. Today I did a side-by-side comparison with it and my wifes SX730. She wins hands down! How can that be? I've tried changing modes, raw, timer, etc. Posting sample photos. Towers are four miles away. Any ideas? Trade it in? Any help appreciated.

Not sure what you are accomplishing but both cameras are wonderful

The biggest problem with the picture on the left is simply camera shake.  At more than twice the weight, the G3X is harder to hold steady.  There is also a difference in exposure between the two; the G3X picture is over-exposed.  With a steady camera (tripod) and a more accurate exposure, I don't think that the G3X would be any worse than the SX730.

In this scene, however, I would not expect the G3X to do much better.  In very bright scenes, the advantages of a larger sensor are not as apparent.  When shooting JPEG, the dynamic range advantages of the G3X are also less apparent.

I don't think that these images provide any basis to judge the two cameras.

I used a tripod for all photos. Here's a different subject, partial shade. The heron, G3X on the left. What's the point of a 1" sensor. It should do noticeably better than  the much smaller one, right?

Apparently you did not click on the "original size" to view images; the G3 X image very poor IQ.

I have the G3X and SX740. My go to is always the G3X unless I need the smaller lighter camera for travel convenience. More cropping ability effectively giving a better zoom range if needed.  With the eye level viewfinder more support for tele shots and so much more.

It has more to do with the lens. The lens on the G3X may be not as good or can be decentered or otherwise misaligned. I had a G9X that the right half of the images were soft with telephotos I took with it. If the cameras had good lenses and similar exposures, the larger sensor should deliver a cleaner image. This is the reason why there are cameras with larger sensors.

Re: G3X loses to SX730!!??

My understanding as well. Much bigger sensor has got to make a better image and bigger lens. C'mon, man.

SX230, cropped

screen capture

Pretty sure it is faulty lens, adjustment, etc. Got it used and no doubt that's why they sold it. I spent months thinking it must be operator error like Jon says. Now what do I do. Would hate to pass on the problem to the next guy. Maybe I could trade it in? Here a photo of the same subject with an SX230. More noise in the sky, but the focus is better than the G3X ever manages. Been in contact with Canon. Their guy said maybe it's the digital zoom...shoot with optical zoom of 25x and that should do it. Well, that's one of the many things I've already tried and it looks the same as 100x with digital zoom. No suggestion about sending it in to be adjusted. Don't know if that can even be done.

Re: G3X loses to SX730!!??

Mark, thanks for posting. Do you find the SX740 takes pretty good pictures, but the G3X does better? Does the SX740 ever make better images than the G3X? Do you think I have a lemon or is it me? After months of trying I'm thinking it's the camera. Been using digital cameras for twenty years, but I'm no expert. Hard or impossible to make it focus, auto or MF. The SX730 out performs it except in low light.

Re: G3X loses to SX730!!??

I have found my almost perfect camera in the G3X, but it's not convenient for casual travel or unobtrusive shooting however. That's when I'll grab the SX740 knowing the photo quality will suffer some. For night time social shooting I have my G9X II. Small, light pocket sized with a limited zoom range.

Had the same experience vs the 1" TZ200. See this post:

Am not surprised. Bigger sensor means bigger compromises in lens construction to stay compact...
