My Nikon D-850+ 24-70 X a Mirrorless?

Hello!

I would like to sell my Nikon D-850 and my lens: AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f / 2.8E ED VR to be able to buy a Nikon or Sony mirroless.

What do you advise me? I am in Spain and now there are good offers.

Thank you so much!
Jose.

The Z7ii would be a step up from the D850 in a mirrorless format.  It's very similar to the D850 - high resolution, dual cards, separate AF processor, etc.  But it's got all the latest technologies - and all the familiar ones as well.  Your move would be largely seamless since you are already familiar with the controls and menus.

The question is whether you choose the Z 24-70 f/4 lens or the 24-70 f/2.8 for the Z system.  I have both lenses.  They are both excellent.  The f/2.8 version is expensive, so if you don't need f/2.8 the f/4 version would be a smart choice.

I'd get the FTZ adapter with your purchase.  It's a good choice and adds flexibility because it allows you to use F-mount lenses.

Jose,

Just curious, but what functions/specs do you find lacking in the D850 that you are making you need a mirrorless Nikon/Sony?

I'd say keep what you have.  The Z7ii is basically a re-hash of the Z7, with a couple of things added in that Nikon missed the first time. No big deal.

But if you are intent on ML, have a serious look at the Sony and Canon as well.  Your options are wide open, as it's highly unlikely you have any Zee glass sitting around.  So while you may decide on Nikon Z in the end, don't rule out the other manufacturers.

A Canon G5 and a bit of Nikon gear.

Re: My Nikon D-850+ 24-70 X a Mirrorless?

Thanks Ericbowles! I like the Z7II, I'll try to check the prices with the cheapest lens option to get started.

I also have a Nikon 24-74 lens (kit lens that is very good) and a 70-300, which I will try to sell as well to be able to make the change without spending a fortune.

Do you have an idea of how much I can ask for everything?

I have some hope of getting a decent sum for the 24-70 VR, but I still don't know how much to ask for. What do you think?

Thank you again!

Joseph.

Re: My Nikon D-850+ 24-70 X a Mirrorless?

Thanks for helping Bowle!

The D-850 is an extraordinary machine, but at the same time a bit big and heavy, especially when used with the 24-70 VR, and I happen to be traveling a lot and I would like something more compact. But also, and very important to me, is that despite the fact that I have had the D-850 for about 3 years, the photos that I have best achieved were the ones I took in Live View, and I often have a hard time getting good focus, good definition in some situations. The 24-70 lens is excellent in speed and accuracy, but lacks a bit of micro-contrast.

Also I am convinced that the mirror system is practically dead. I would like to be able to shoot while looking at an electronic viewfinder and not have to worry about mirror-slapping and other deficiencies resulting from the DSLR system.

Thanks Again!
Joseph.

Re: My Nikon D-850+ 24-70 X a Mirrorless?

Thanks T O Shooter!

I will definitely consider other brands.
I like what I see of the Fuji, but the color of the JPG of this one seems unnatural and too cold for my taste.
Canon is a brand that I have not used for many years, but I will definitely consider it. Nikon is what I have been using since its first digital models (D-70).

My problem now is that I don't see that I can be in time to sell my D-850 and the 24-70VR lens to take advantage of the offers that end this week. I don't even know how much I'm going to ask for everything yet.

Regards,
Joseph

The difference between the D850 +24-70/2.8 and the Z7ii + 24-70/2.8 is 500g. A huge saving in terms of a camera and lens.

However, I myself am 10,000g overweight so if I want to reduce the weight I'm carrying all day, cutting down on the pies would be a lot more effective.

Using UK prices, the D850 plus lens would net around £2,200 and the Z&ii plus lens would cost around £4,700 meaning those 500g would cost £2,500. Or £5 per gram if you prefer.

In your particular spot I'd say a Z7II with the 24-70 2.8 looks pretty compelling. The body is cheaper than the Canon and Sony competition, the lens appears to be best in class, and the combination is impressively lightweight.

If you tell us what you shoot then we can suggest. I am considering to switch from the mirrorless to DSLR, because I need better buffer clearing, better AF, and better ergo/comfort for sports.

Just  my 0.02 USD

Thanks Daniel Bliss !.

I like what I see about the Z7II. I do not know how much I will have to expend after selling my D-850 and the 24-70VR lens, maybe it would be convenient for me to buy the Z7II with a cheaper lens,

Also I did not know that it is still not available, so its going to be quite expensive.

We will see how much I can get out of my machine ...

Regards.

Good point!

For me it all depends on how much money I will have to spend even after having sold my D-850 and the 24-70VR lens. Surely the ZII plus a fast lens will be quite expensive, so I'll wait to see how much I get for my equipment first.

Then it is easy - for just walkabouts IMO mirrorless is way more handy. I do not walk with my gear and hunt for photo occasions. If I ever did I would stick to something light.

I shoot mainly sports/action events so it does not matter so much what weight I carry, as I choose the best possible quality. I am giving up on the idea of D850 and D500 as "a perfect combo" for my photo activities. Too much hassle with lens calibration, shutter noise (people are getting more and more sensitive generally speaking), so I will keep A6600 and suplement it with A9. D850 is still one of the best DSLRs, but with longer lenses and a grip, which is essential to keep 9FPS is way too big and heavy
