... On Birds...

... Just searched “Flickr D100 photos”, then “Flickr D200 photos”, then “Flickr D500 photos”

... No bird photos in the first search. Maybe 3% bird pictures in the second. And, almost 100% picture of birds in the D500 search.

... What ever happened to photography?

Maybe it's the method of search you're using.

Here's hundreds of "bird" results using a D100 on Flickr:

Lots and lots of cameras and phones too can take good photos of things that aren't moving fast.

The D500 and the 300 before it are better than most cameras at difficult subjects like fast moving birds. I suspect as time has gone on the D500 buyer is passing up cheaper cameras because they need the very best at focusing on fast action, so birds are going to be a big part of that and conversely the guy that just wants to take photos is using a camera or a cheaper more versatile superzoom./bridge.

The reason I have my D300S and the reason I might get a D500 is not for general type photos, it is because I want to nail flying birds and my dogs running full speed. A bald eagle pair lives near me and one day one of them skimmed about 8 feet over my head. One day I'll have my camera when he does that and I want it to lock! For just general not-fast-moving stuff my old D60 does a fine job and the colors are actually a bit nicer than the 300. For landscapes and so on I would have stuck with that and saved money.

Re: ... On Birds...

In my case the long delay between the D300 and D500 caused me to go FF. I got a D610, and still use that as my main choice for landscapes, portraits, family gatherings and general photography.

Eventually, I did get a D500... for birds and wildlife. My Tamron 150-600mm stays permanently attached to it. This is mostly out of convenience.

Interesting flickr searches Iain. By themselves I don't think they say anything about how photography has changed or whether it’s been overtaken by birds, if that's what you meant. The results do seem to reflect how the camera market grew far more fragmented in the 10-15 years between the D100/200 and the D500, and how if Nikon was going to stay in the high-end Dx DSLR market, it had to go for even more specialization.

You can argue that the D500 is a highly capable camera for any type of photography, but its unique mix of features (robust AF, deep buffer, high frame rate, rugged build, crop sensor for reach, etc) seems calculated to appeal most strongly to a narrow, well-defined audience. The very bird-y D500 search results suggest that Nikon had at least some success in exploiting a small open space in a crowded camera market (even if it took them a little too long to get there).

You're assuming the search result will be representative of the genre of photography done with those cameras. That's a mistaken assumption. Search engine algorithms aren't written to do that. Try launching Flickr and searching, "[camera model] [photographic genre]" and you'll get hundreds of genre-specific images made with that camera.
