G5X M2 AF - how slow?
1

A little background about myself. I usually carry my Sony a6300 + 16-70Z when I travel, but I finally realized that I really dislike carrying a large camera/lens during my trips. I also have Sony RX100 M5, which I have rarely used, so I started playing with it more, with an intention of making it the only camera I carry during my future trips (go away Covid!!). But oh the AWB is pretty bad on this camera. I shoot RAW, so I am not referring to the JPEG engine color rendering. I am referring to the accuracy of the WB values the processor picks in AWB mode. It often shifts too much to red, whenever it "thinks" the scene is supposed to have a warm tone (autumn scene, faces, etc...). And I don't want to keep fixing them in PP.

That brought me to Canon G5X M2. I used to own G9X, and I remember its AWB more accurate than that of Sony. Also, from what I have read (quite extensively), G5X M2's IQ seems slightly higher than the G7X series. I don't pixel peek (like I did at one point), so I think I'll be happy with the slightly less sharp images of G5X M2 (comparing to Sony). And oh that extra zoom while staying at f/2.8 is so lovely!! And I would enjoy the touch focus my Sony does not have.

But I am not sure if I'll be happy with the AF speed. I had Sony RX100 M3 but upgraded to M5 because I could not stand the slow AF of M3. But now that my kids are teenagers, they don't move as fast as they used to, so I don't need a super fast AF for travel pictures. BUT, I don't want the AF to be as slow as the AF of Sony RX100 M3, which I found very very slow. So my question is, can somebody please tell me if the Canon G5X M2 AF is as slow as the Sony RX100 M3 AF?

Thank you very much for the link! The reviewer called G5X M2's continuous AF "trash"!?? 😂

But I still find myself interested in this camera! 😁

Re: G5X M2 AF - how slow?

I guess a lot of this will come down to how accustomed you've become to phase detect vs contrast detect autofocus.

I was happy with the original G5X autofocus.  I've since upgraded to the G1X Mark III, with its phase detection.

I recently used a G5X Mark II on a trip and found it to be a good all-around camera for travel.  But as fast as the AF was on it, I just got used to the phase detect of the G1X Mark III, so the G5X Mark II felt noticeably less confident in some situations (like keeping focus tracking something in video at longer focal lengths).  But the f/2.8 and range are nice indeed in a camera that size.

Thank you very much for sharing your experience. I really hope the next version of G5X will have the phase detect. Then I will get it in a heart beat!

It's good to see your post.

I'd like to follow it to see what you choose Mikan.

My new-to-me Sony RX100-7 has a steep learning curve for me.

I liked my Canon G9 very much, but that was long ago.

I think I'll wait out. Hoping there will be a new version of G5X with a better AF in near future. I'm afraid I might have gotten spoiled with Sony's fast AF, and also I'm used to Sony's menu.

The AF is just about the only major advantage the Sony has over the Canon, pretty much everything else, whether it be price, ergonomics, menu, lens (I prefer more light to more zoom), superb touchscreen and natural color rendering appears to be better on the Canon.

...and the AF on the Canon is not bad at all, read the reviews!

I helped a friend buy  a Canon G5X. I was really impressed with that camera.

The M2 would be even better. Back then I wasn't interested in buying any cameras.  Stuff happens.

Oh the lens! Not only it's longer than RX100 M5, but also it stays brighter than Sony as you zoom. Why can't Sony do the same!? 😜

The ergonomics are better too I like the grip

Edit: I don't know why Sony can't do the same. I was impressed with the M50 Canon. It felt so good in my hands. It was small too. Have you considered the "M" camera?
