Sony 16-70 and 18-135 both reduced on Amazon.co.uk

It's now GBP 459 at Amazon.co.uk

Is it worth getting at that price? Most reviews of it are pretty old so I'm wondering if recent copies have significantly improved.

Does anyone have a recent copy of this lens and if so what do you think of it?

I see the 18-135 is also reduced to GBP 399 here

Which would you go for if you were in the market for an APS-C zoom?

I have the 18-135 and use it on my a6400 as my general purpose, "walk around" lens, mostly for street candids.  This lens ticks off a lot of boxes.  Extremely useful focal length with very good IQ.  The lens is lightweight and has a stabilizer.  The 18-135 is not weather sealed, but if it were, it would likely be heavier and more expensive.  I'm very happy with this lens and would recommend it.

I added both lens to my basket went out for a while, when I got back I had another look at the listing for the 16-70 and noticed a £70 discount voucher which brought the price of the 16-70 down to £389, which is a steal.

I did weigh things up between that lens and the 18-135 (which I'd always considered getting) but the F4 constant aperture and smaller size of the Zeiss-branded lens swayed it for me, compared with the variable aperture of 3.5 to 5.6 of the 18-135.  Also the 16mm at the short end was important so I've ended up buying the 16-70 - hopefully it'll be a good copy without the QA issues that were widely reported shortly after the lens was first released.

I'm really happy with my 18-135.  Putting them at the same or quite close prices makes the choice more difficult.  At the time I got mine, there was a substantial difference in price.   Depends on one's use/interests.  I've found that I often want both wider than 16mm (or 18mm) and longer than 50mm to 70mm or so.

One could make a case for either.  I don't "need" both but I also have a dslr kit that includes a 17-50/2.8 (and a range of other lenses, too).  For me, the 18-135 is a better single lens fit but even that depends on what I'm doing or where I am, etc.

TBH if the 16-70 had been priced much higher than the 18-135 I’d have probably ordered the latter, as I already have the 10-18 so the wider angle is covered, but the 16-70 range is very appealing.

These Black Friday deals are really something, aren't they.

I just bought a Tamron 35-135 mm f3.5-4.2 on eBay for GBP 12.50. I thought maybe I'd overpaid but looking at this thread I feel better.

That is a remarkable price for a 16-70. I hope you bought it before the price went up. I paid close to $900 USD when I bought mine. I love the lens and have taken well over 20,000 images with it.

I picked up the 16-70 at the much reduced price and it arrived today. I already have a 16-55 f/2.8, but wanted something lighter and with OSS I could use on the lighter a6000, which of course has no IS. I tested it quickly outside against the 16-55 today. My copy of the 16-70 seems well centred, though it still has pretty dubious corners and edges, even at f/8. Against the 16-55, it is less sharp in the entire image, has less contrast,  and is much weaker in the corners and edges. The 16-55 is of course, a very sharp and contrasty lens, even if it has silly levels of distortion.

I watched a YouTube review comparing the 16-70 and 16-55 and the latter looks like a very fine lens which justifies it's RRP much more than the 16-70, which I do like for its small size, useful range and constant f4 aperture.

Another review from the same guy compared the 16-55 with the Sigma prime trio of 16, 30 and 56mm primes and his test shots showed a negligible difference in sharpness between the zoom and the primes.

I've not seem the 16-55 discounted much other than the Sony cash back at around this time of year.

I certainly did, couldn't believe my luck. I knocked my  16-50 kit lens off the table and onto a hard floor a few months ago whilst changing lenses - no damage to the glass itself but the focus/zoom ring is very stiff and not really usable, so this deal on the 16-70 is very welcome. Hopefully it's a good copy, I'll take some pics of brick walls to test that out.

Christmas time 3 years ago I bought the 16-70. I really like the lens. It is a great travel lens. The main reasons why I went for  this lens and not the 18-105 are, the close focusing distance, the small size, the colours and the 16mm.

The lens is not the sharpest, (when compared to primes) but for viewing on a computer it is good enough. The colours are really rendered beautifully. It is a fantastic family lens, I can use 16mm for landscapes, 24 to get some environmental portraits then as I go into telephoto I can get some background separation.

My copy was centered. I was told that the issue seems to be the worst at 24 and persists till about 35mm. Also beyond 50mm the corner sharpness is not really good, but I use ti Mostly to Isolate the subject which I avoid the corner for the subject. Also at 16mm wide open the corners are not really good, but stopped down they improve. The leans has really good contrast and colours are very vivid. Focus on my a6000 is one of the best I have used.

When I got the lens I was concerned. I was told about a test, where I used a black cardboard and stuck some white rings that are used on perforated paper to support around the perforation or filing. I placed these around the cardboard symmetrically. Then I took out of focus images, and compared the out of focus to see if it is centered. Comparing the size and shape of the out of focus rings I guess is easier than judging sharpness on a wall. Mine seemed to be well centered.

Tamron may release a new apsc 17-70 f2.8 early next year.  The 16-70 Zeiss is selling around 350usd used in Hong Kong.

I'd guess that'll be a larger lens than the Zeiss

I'd expect so.  There are some threads/rumors out there with more details on the expected lens and IIRC some have "specs" and pictures of the lens.
