My wives phone went black

I believe it is a Samsung J2, I was using the phone to make a call, when finished ended call and hit home button.  Phone went black, it has been on charger for awhile and this is the screen it gives when hitting on button while charging.  Any idea on the problem?  She goes through Total Wireless at Best Buy.

Looks like a charging for symbol.  Could be a moisture issue, a bad charger or cable issue, a software/firmware issue, a bad USB port, or a charging board issue.

Try removing the battery for 30 seconds and then put it back in.

Try different cable and charger.

Try cleaning the USB port with alcohol and then blow it out with compressed air.

If that doesn't work then try a hard reset and maybe wipe the cache.

No experience with that phone but often use Android Recovery Mode when A phone or tablet has a problem (or even just slows down.) Once charged, or on a charger cable, restart the phone using hardware key sequence shown. Best to first try "wipe cache partition" because it flushes and rebuilds the system cache without deleting anything or changing any settings - navigate using the hardware Vol buttons and select using the Power button. On devices that support it, I do Recovery Mode cache wipes every few months or when noticing any operational issues.

Hard reset ("wipe data / factory reset") is a last resort because it restores the device to "out of the box" configuration and preinstalled apps, deleting everything else. If there's important personal data, photos, etc. on the phone not backed up elsewhere (why the heck not?) try to connect the phone to a PC to extract and save what you can. Also requires logging back in to the same Google Account (be sure to know how) to activate the device afresh.

The above is standard Android, while I think some Samsung models have extra diagnostic and recovery software and support manuals online.  Does look like a hardware problem from the charging screen shown.

Good idea to independently double-check and confirm for the specific phone.  Good luck.

How many wives do you have?

That's my opinion, and it's worth what you paid for it.

Phone eventually corrected itself after a few hrs.  For a cheap phone I'm not surprised.

Quite interesting that this cheap phone has a feature to tell the user that the device getting very warm and that as a precaution the power cable should be removed.

Must have been a very long phone call.

It’s telling you the internal temp is too high . Allow phone time to cool down and clean battery contacts in case that’s what’s causing the issue with a poor connection during charging.

Is the battery swollen?

Does the phone or battery look at all bulged? If so then this is a sign of a swollen battery and this is very bad.

I recently went through a round of swollen batterywith a tablet. I was able to replace the battery with no problems but I just took a close look at my Pixel 2 and I am not happy to see that the screen is starting to bulge out. The Pixel 2 battery isn't really user replaceable (lots of glue that requires heat and volatile solvents), so I'm suddenly in the market for a new phone.

Be very wary of swollen batteries.
