Sigma 17-50mm 2.8 on Z50
1

I have read somewhere on the forum about this lens on Z50, but can’t find it. The Sigma 17-50mm could be an addition to the 16-50mm kitlens especially in wintertime in Norway. There is not much daylight up here in the north. Has anyone on the forum used this lens on the Z50? What l would like to know is how it performs on the Z50. I hope the autofocus will worh properly via the ftz adapter.

Yes, it works fine with the FTZ.  I didn't notice any difference compared to using it on a D5600.  It's a sharp lens - the 50mm end in particular.  And the price is very good.  I ended up using the Nikon 16-80 f/2.8-4 instead for the greater zoom range, but the Sigma was about the same in terms of optical quality.

Thank you for your quick reply. I will definitely consider getting a copy for my Z50. They come rather cheap these days second hand.

I have it and it's definitely better than the "kit" 16-50.  Not that the the 16-50 is a bad lens, by no means.... but, the Sigma is a faster and sharper lens.  Images it produces are outstanding.  It's the lens that's usually always on my camera.

FWIW - the interview portions of this video were shot with the Sigma 17-50 OS 2.8 at 2.8 on my Z50. Overall, it's a good lens. My primary use for the Z50 is video and the AF was a little noisy. I also didn't find the OS that helpful for video work. While I liked the lens, I opted for the Sigma 18-35 1.8 Art in the end for the shallower DOF.

Thank you for your replies. I will definitely get a copy of this lens real soon. Nothing wrong about the 16-50 kit lens, but it is slow and a bit plasticky.

I posted some shots comparing various lens on D7200 and Z-50 including Sigma 17-50 f2.8 here. https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/64405810

Short story even shorter...it works fine.

I think it's a good choice. I was hoping for more from the OS when shooting video handheld. But the OS does add about 2 stops for still photos. I wish the Sigma ART 18-35 1.8 went to 50mm. Then it would be a dream lens and fit a little more nicely with the 50-100 1.8.

As someone who was considering going this route myself, I'm glad to see the reports here are fairly encouraging. I especially like using the slightly wider end for nighttime photography and the kit is just too slow for my tastes. Also, I found the sunstars are pretty mediocre, even compared to something like the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 VR II that I had with my D3300. For those of you who used the Sigma at night, how are the sunstars with that lens?

Had to dig into ancient history (2014) to find these: on D5300

For comparison, here is Tokina 11-16 f2.8

Thanks, dude! The Tokina seems like it definitely has a leg-up on the Sigma in that particular regard.

For the sharpness and extra stops of light though, the Sigma might at least be worth a rental for me to see if it's worth the investment to replace the 16-50 kit I have at the moment, especially considering the price. It'd be nice if Nikon eventually released a Z-mount version of its 17-55mm f/2.8 DX, but I don't know how wise it would be to hold out hope for such a thing.

I wouldn't hold out hope for a fast Z-DX mount from Nikon at this time: at least by using the F-mount you can get in lens stabilization.  Why I insisted on buying the Z-50 kit with FTZ included.

My Sigma 17-50mm arrived today, but the autofocus doesn’t work on my camera with ftz. On the box it says the lens is for Nikon D. Is there a newer version of this lens, or do l have to update the firmware?

In terms of the lens, this is the one you want. Mine worked fine out of the box with the Z50 and FTZ.

You may need a firmware update. I'm not sure if you can use Sigma's USB dock or if Sigma needs to do it. Check with whoever sold you the lens.

What version of the lens do you have? There have been several revisions. The current one is Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM. It looks like this.

Current model 17-50mm

This model should work. Check to see if the AF switch is on.

Older models may not be compatible with the FTZ.

This model cannot be updated by the user but it should not be necessary.

My lens looks like this, but l am a little puzzled by the box saying for Nikon D
