In love with the Z5
14

Hello!

My partner bought a Nikon Z5, but I ordered it and it arrived at my house. I've been playing with it, and I'm in love!! I've used different cameras, and always went back to an Olympus E-M1 or E-M5 camera. I love those two.

The quality of the Z5 pictures have been really good, but don't know if I'm used to Olympus. On those bodies I tend to keep ISO between 200-800 and it helps thanks to IBIS. On the Z5 the IBIS isn't so good, but high ISO pictures look good. I'm surprised at how much you can recover in raw. The camera is a good size and weight is not bad, but I would like lighter. I've been using the 24-70mm F4 lens. Waiting for the 28mm and 40mm. Here are some random pictures.

As a Canon RF shooter I'm honestly jealous of the Z5. If you don't need video, speed or huge MPs it's a great camera. Lack of IBIS on my R is becoming a bit more of a dealbreaker as well...............

And I'm waiting for a Z5/24-70 kit (already available in Japan) cause the 24-50 kit lens is too slow and limited range and I don't need FTZ adapter of another kit at all. So Nikon is selling only kits that I don't like and don't sell Z5 as a body. That's a bummer.

I don't know why they do this. The Z5 sells with the 24-50, the 24-70, and as a body only here in Canada:

I'm not in any way affiliated with Henrys, but I did buy my Z5 W/24-70 on release from them, and they've given me excellent service, as I got the 24-200 and traded the 24-70 towards the 14-30. Not sure if they ship to the US but might be worth looking into with the exchange rate

Unfortunately I live in Russia. Hopefully they'll sell Z5/24-70 kit everywhere if it'll be a popular one, and I'm pretty sure it will be. Otherwise I'll buy the FTZ kit, but I'll be not the only one who is doing so. Our ebay is full of FTZ adapters so it'll be a problem to sell one for it's 130USD additional price (it costs 280 USD sold separately).

PS: Could you do me a favour, when you have some time?

I'd like to know if, when in M(anual) mode with Auto-ISO, exposure compensation works.

Here's a reviewer that's normally tough on Nikon, with a glowing review of the Z5

yes it does.  I normally do my EV +/- with one of the top/main dials... but since both are "occupied" in M, you use the (unchangeable) Fn button on the top rt edge

I wouldn't classify KR as a reviewer. His site is all over the place. I wouldn't trust what he says.

A quote from his site: This website is a work of fiction, entirely the product of my own imagination and personal opinion. To use words of Ansel Adams on page 193 of his autobiography this site is my "aggressive personal opinion," and not a "logical presentation of fact."

I'm not sure what to think; he's a mix of trump and Fauci, ha ha.

Take him for what he's worth (w/ grain of salt) and he's worthwhile source?

Better than Z6?

I sold my Z6 because of the banding, I wonder if the Z5 has any?

Are we talking about silent mode with artificial light?  If so, all cameras with electronic shutter have that.

Maybe this quote from the dpreview of the z5 may help: "And, unlike the Z6, the phase detection pixels seem to have been perfectly corrected for: there's no striping even in the deepest shadows.". Maybe not....?

Yep

They said the same for Z6ii but I still found some in their own studio test in dark blue, though yes it's definitely less than with Z6(i), I found banding in the blue sky of some ski photos after light fall off correction and +40 shadows recovery with my ex-Z6

A quote from Ken‘s Z6II review:

„Canon has won. Nikon lacks the budget to develop what we need. I wouldn't let friends throw any more major money into Nikon mirrorless; I'd upgrade to Canon as soon as you can.“

And from the Z5:

„ If you're addicted to Nikon then the Z5 is my favorite, but if you're open-minded and not stuck on Nikon, I much prefer anything from the Canon EOS-R system

so he really isn‘t recommending buying the camera...
