X-T2 - face detection improved
2

Hi,

I keep my firmware up to date. Recently there was an upgrade (because of the 50/1) which I instaled.T oday I turned the face detection on (with XF 16-55).

In AF-S I was surprised by its performance. Not only did it appear stickier, but also once it recognized the face, the green box stayed on the head even if the subject turned sideways or even completely away from the camera.

In AF-C it was also much stickier than before and according to my quick test it was reliable in single shot shooting. Unlike AF-S, It didn't always recognize the head, but when the face was recognized, the shots were generally as sharp as then can be. (In slow burst it was a bit hit or miss).

Have you also noticed this improvement? Or am I just being fooled by my senses after the longer period of time I haven't used face detection? 🙂

I know there were some reports about some improvement of the X-H1. But I wasn't expecting the X-T2, too.

Re: X-T2 - face detection improved

To date, I have not noticed any improvement.

But to be fair, I rarely have face/eye on these days, as it struggles to identify faces with masks.

I’ll also add the 16-55 continually impresses me by blowing away all my other lenses in terms of AF; maybe that’s a factor here.

Let me check and get back to you!

Looking forward to your findings! 🙂

Yes, the 16-55 should be the fastest of all Fuji lenses. Also the f/2.8 and shorter FL helps in comparison with the also quite fast 90/2.

Same set up. I’m going to give it a try again and see if it works any better. Can you please give me your best AF settings for face detect??

I noticed it worked best in Face detection (not Eye detection), AF-S. When it recognized the face, it kept seeing it even if the person turned from the camera, which is something I haven't noticed before.

In AF-C it also involved some tracking, but when thenhead turned, it wasn't tracking it anymore (most of the time). Also is single shot mode it worked better than in burst mode.
