Aaaaah, Abilene, Tx. Never been there. My daughter is currently visiting a friend in Texas, and I told her that I'm going to the hill country next year. Always wanted to do that.

Re: A USA story

Hardly anybody goes here anymore.  The interstate has a huge loop around the north side of the city, so not many folks get to see it unless tired or hungry.  We left Abilene in '43 and a couple of years later, the old home place collapsed to the ground.  It's an open field now.  If you come to Texas be sure to come when the wildflowers bloom.  The state was once covered in Bluebonnets in spring but too much growth has wiped out much of the land, but the hill country is still full of them.  This is from a town outside Austin, Burnet TX on Hwy 287 a major north south highway through many small towns.

Our State Flower.  The Indian Paintbrushes and Indian Blankets, with plenty of red are just as attractive, along with many others.  Many thanks to Lady Bird Johnson.  gc

The Median of IH10 btwn San Antonio and Houston is usually full of bluebonnets and other wildflowers -firewheels, winecups, etc. Around Llano is good, too.

The Bluebonnet Airshow in Burnet TX is 20 Mar in Burnet.

Thanks GCam and Norm. I've always had the bluebonnets on my bucket list

Thanks for sharing this Gary! Where in Alabama might this be? My grandfather was raised in Greensboro and had family members raised similarly.

My Mother was born in 1912 east of Birmingham AL out in the country and I was born in Georgia in 1941 and grew up in metro Atlanta.

In the late 1940's and early 1950's they had outdoor plumbing and I remember on Sundays they would wring one or two chickens and that was our Sunday lunch (which they called "dinner"), My Grandmother would wash clothes in a black wash pot that Gcam mentioned and later my aunt with 4 children that lived about 100 yards down the road bought a wringer washer as pictured. Also my grandparents got indoor plumbing.

My Father had a hardware store in metro Atlanta and we sold wringer washers until to mid 1970's. I remember one person that he sold one to bringing it back because it had a separate lever to pump the water out and he wanted to exchange it out for what he called a "common sense" one which we did.

I love these old stories like this.

This was performed at a music festival in West Virginia in early sixties by one of the attendees. Whoever did it sent a recording to a local radio station and it grew so popular that a recording company produced it and it pretty much wiped Elvis out of #1 on the charts and Billy Ed Wheeler became a household name, even wrote a book about outhouses, and people sent him so many jokes about outhouses that he produced a book on those as well. I found copies of them in a little country store in West VA back when I was traveling. Still have them somewhere. gc

Take time to get off the interstate.  Many wonderful little towns have been b-ipassed and they are a treasure.  My girlfriend and I found a wonderful little town in Montana.  One of the hotels had been brought back in authentic style.  Complete with a claw foot bath tub.  The next morning we took a road up to the old mine.  Everything still intact.  I walked into an old cabin and found a 1951 dated newspaper still on the kitchen table.  '51 is my birthday.  I left it right where it was.

DMax, they were very close. This is outside Brent, AL. I have driven through Greensboro dozens of time. It was on the route my family took from Mobile to Brent.

Re: To: Gman 58

Thanks for the story Kent. Loved it. One of the most fun things we kids did was getting water from the 70' well, which was on the back porch not far from the washer. And I'll always remember all of us sleeping in the room with the pot-bellied stove for heat on a winter night. One thing I never did though was go in the pasture where my uncle kept the bull.:-)

Re: A USA story

Bill, this was apparently a common occurrence. Had no idea. Maybe we shouldn't have ragged my brother about it for so many years.  Those were the days before we had warning labels on everything!

Re: A USA story

So true. It's an America many never see. One of the highlights of my trip to Arizona was visiting the ghost town in Jerome? And I still want to do the Route 66 drive.
