The old EOS 6D for Astro

Wait a bit - take some astro images with the unmodded camera and see what you get. New cameras have higher Ha sensitivity than older ones - and the unmodded camera can be successfully used for aunt Annie as well as Andromeda.

but still I’m not getting the every signal from the object right? Clear skies here are extremely precious, i may want to fully utilise the every signal being captured, so this might be the last resort

Ok - have lots of bad weather at my place too, so setteled for a real thermolectrically cooled astro camera. But then I have a small shed for the setup.

If money is no issue go for the custom modded Canon camera (yes, a bit pricey but it works and works and works - jusp plug into the game and go).

Go for the North America nebula and the Rosette nebula for a first look. I have successfully imaged both objects with an unmodded Sony A7III - and the unmodded Canon should be a much better camera for deep sky photography (very pleased with the Sony for everything but astrophotography - have an astromodded Canon 6D lying around).

Oh I have heard some good things about the 6D, this was actually one of my plans too. Is it wise to trade the R with a 6D? I’m not sure it’s mk1 or mk2 specifically, but it’s popular around the community. Should I trade a used 6D and mod it?

Would NOT get a 6D now.

My main gripe is that the locked up mirror casts a shadow on part of the image (telescopes have different light paths than regular camera lenses). In this regard a mirrorless is the obvious choice. Better image sensor too.

My reply here is more of a "mulling over" rather than a direct reply to the comments above.  The 6D was certainly a popular model and held its own with astrophotographers.  I haven't looked into this but the mirror shouldn't cause any issue with the imaging process.  I certainly had no problems with it myself.   I don't think I even bothered to lock the mirror up but then again, most of my images were less than 30 seconds long with exposures.  When it's locked up it's not obscuring any part of the sensor or image plane.
.
The popularity of the 6D in Astrophotography has always been strong and there are people who buy them today for this use.  Some end up getting modded for IR but the number of them in use should testify to their popularity... which I think was/is the result of the 6D being better than alternative models for Astrophotography.   The Lonely Speck lists the EOS 6D as being one of the best out there for Astro work. - https://www.lonelyspeck.com/canon-eos-6d-review/  ... this is interesting because the 6D has no Tilt-LCD screen and no built-in Intervalometer. But it's the high-ISO performance that sets up this DSLR for Astro lovers.  This all changes when you compare the EOS 6D with the EOS R6.  The differences and advantages of the R6 (and the performance) is really something that needs to be experienced to be appreciated.  I too would not buy a 6D at this time.  As wonderful as the results were in the past, the 6D is an aged model that was known for being the smallest, lightest, cheapest Full Frame DSLR at the time of release.  The dropping prices of the EOS R cameras make them more attractive for Astro... modified or not.  The R6 seems to take the R system up a notch with Astro although the Ra is a strong contender if you don't have issues with color blooming etc.

And modding a 6D can work out well or not so well. Depends on what filter is used. My Baader filter gives nice red reflections from bright stars outside the center of the field. But I do not mind. Just call it character and all is fine!

Most telescopes are not designed with Full Frame cameras in mind.  That's just one of the reasons why APS-C is still very popular with astrophotographers.   But there are more cameras being released (especially devices like the new Celestron 'astrographs') that are Full Frame friendly.  I can appreciate why a dedicated, cooled camera that is designed to plug into a telescope can be ideal.  The problem is that these types of camera + telescope are unsuitable for wide-field landscapes with astrophotography.
.
For example: a dedicated tubular imaging camera is great for deep space imaging whilst connected to a computer and plugged into a telescope. But that type of system isn't going to enable the capture of a landscape that also happens to include the Milky Way (for example).  Having a dedicated IR-Cut modified DSLR or Mirrorless camera that can use all manner of lenses PLUS be plugged into a telescope for Prime photography (or Hyperstar-type f/2 imaging) makes it more versatile for travel or for working with quality lenses rather than a telescope.
.
I was going to trade in my EOS 6D when I bought into the R system but the dealers only wanted a hundred dollars or so for the body because they had already bought so many of them during the beginning of the Pandemic lockdown... presumably from folks wanting to update existing gear or trying to make some money when they were suddenly unable to work.  The dealers were interested in an EOS 6D II if I had one, but I passed on that model when it was released.  So my 6D now sits on a shelf collecting dust. It was a decent camera in its day.  I think I bought mine around 2013.

Re: anyone modded eos r successfully for astrophotography?

sorry for the late reply, have been playing with the R lately.

so I mod it by myself a few weeks ago and tried it on the M42 as you can see below,

it was an easier process than I expected, but aliasing was observable after the mod and it seems the images are less detailed.

Anyway, I think it's a beast for Astro now, the image below was only 2 hours worth of data in bottle 8 skies, L-enhance used.

just post this for someone else who is interested in modding the R as well, I would say go for it!!
