Zion National Park

We recently did a road trip to Utah, Arizona and Colorado, taking in a number of National Parks. Rather than a mega post I have made one for each location. Your thoughts, questions and critique is welcome.

Thanks Jim, took a bit of walking round it to get the right angle, but it was worth it!

Re: Zion National Park

How crowded was the park in comparison to pre-covid times. Was there car access to Zion Canyon or was it still by bus. If I remember correctly Zion doesn't open up to cars until sometime later in November. Colors genrally peak about the 2nd week in November. Looks like you were a little early.

Where  is the cabin located?

Thanks

Rick

Re: Zion National Park

Hey Rick,

Zion was still shuttle that you needed to book ahead. You could do it 2 weeks in advance or the day before. They sold out within 10 minutes. The parks were quiet in the morning and got more crowded as the day went on. A few times it felt like we were a bit uncomfortable with the number of people, but generally it was fine.

The cabin was on this trail in the Kolob Canyon part of the park: https://www.alltrails.com/explore/map/middle-fork-taylor-creek-trail-a7d8ae4?p=-1

That was pretty quiet and actually I preferred it to the main canyon. The first shot of the series was also on that trail.

Re: Zion National Park

OK let me ask..is the shuttle book only?  I haven't heard of that.  It used to be line up at the visitor center and take what you get.  Which raises the issue of return. Can you give us a little more info on that.   Re your cabin hike it seems about 3 miles what is the elevation gain?  Any water to cross..

OF course and the last question...would you do the cabin again?

Thanks

Rick

Re: Zion National Park

You book an hour's timeslot from the visitors center and then you can hop on in the park. Details are here: https://www.nps.gov/zion/planyourvisit/zion-canyon-shuttle-tickets.htm

We weren't organised enough to book the tickets two weeks in advance so I did it the day before bang on 0900. By 0910 they had all gone.

The cabin wasn't at the end of the hike, but I can't remember how far. I would definitely recommend it although I wouldn't do it again as I've done it once! I preferred it to the hikes in the Zion canyon.

There was a fair amount of water to cross. The trail basically follows a creek, but it was really small. We did it with our 4 and 7 year old and neither got wet feet. I think total elevation is about 700fy so nothing major.

Re: Zion National Park

My daughter and a friend made an impromptu trip to Zion back mid-October on a weekend..  Too late to book tram, etc.  Instead of trying to grab a same day, they rented a couple of electric bikes.  Those can run out, too, but they got them even without pre-  Mid-week is perhaps less crowded.booking. They really liked them, although neither is used to biking so a little sore by the end of the day.  They were able to ride up and do the Narrows, could stop anywhere they wanted.  Of course, perhaps a couple of 30 year olds might be more amenable to that than her mom and I.  Nor would one be able to deal with too much camera gear.
