Some photos from a small rock show yesterday
8

Before you guys freak out, I live in HCM City where covid concern is pretty much nonexistent right now, nearly everything went back to normal. So yesterday I attended a small rock show at RockFanClub bar and tested out the R6 + RF 50mm f1.2. The show was awesome and here are some shots I took. The lighting was real dark, with multi-color light overlays, so you may notice the different tones between the pics. Despite that the RF 50 and eye AF worked pretty well, I'd say ~85% of the shots has good eye focus. Now I wish I had taken the 70-200 ii for some more artistic close up shots, but nevertheless I'm quite pleased with the results.

That looked like a real tough venue to shoot in without a doubt. Really enjoyed the pics and noticed the shutter speed never dropped below 1/125th. Curious as to what mode the camera was in and if you programmed the minimum shutter speed before the shoot.

These pics look great - make me want to run out and get a 50 1.2 (and start going to concerts again)

Thanks, (first-ish) half of the shots were taken in Aperture priority, with manual min shutter speed being 1/125 to prevent too much motion blur (I figured a bit of blur was okay, to reflect the live actions and movements). The other shots are in manual with me manually set the shutter speed to sometimes 1/160 ish or even 1/200, as the actions in those sequences were too erratic. I let the ISO freely skyrocket because I believe 12800 or even 25600 is still salvageable with the R6 sensor, and in worst case scenario I can still live happily with some (artistic?) noise, or even convert the pics to B&W to help the mood.

Yeah covid has make concerts (even small ones like this) a real treat, to at least break free from everyday life stress. The 50 1.2 is awesome and will serve you very well in lots of scenarios!

I'm a bit surprised at all the noise at ISO's that aren't all that up there. I wonder what that's all about. I fully expected this camera to have that kind of noise at ISO's far above 4000.

Name the gear and I've probably owned it and used it.

With the 2.8 you would have had to set your ISO much higher or your shutter speed much lower. I think you brought the right lens for the job

Are these SOOC JPEGs or RAWs with little or no PP?  I'm curious as to how the combination of R6 at very high ISO plus DxO Photolab 4's Deep Prime compare to SOOC JPEGs.

There seems to be very little, or no NR. A lot of good details though, so it seems it would clean up nicely.

They are moderately edited RAWs (some exposure tweaking and slight color changes). If you want I can upload some original RAW and SOOC jpg files from this show for you to play with.

Sure...I'll run them through PL 4's Prime and Deep Prime and post the results here.

Great photos. I'm surprised eye focus works with someone wearing glasses (if body supports it). I can only imagine how difficult it would be to make photos of a rock show.

Thanks for posting.

Sorry for the late reply, I was away for a couple days without my camera handy. Here are some sample pairs of high ISO RAW and SOOC jpegs for you to analyze: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1aDEGRnFP6G5g5SvbJtcH2wBKmDedC2iX?usp=sharing

Photos aside....HCM City is a whole world away from life in Europe where we've drifted back lockdown - restaurants, bars and most shops shut. No visiting people in their houses, concerts or sports tec etc...it's nice just to see that for some places there is a way out of all of this! Lucky you.

Here are the images processed with DxO Photolab 4 using all defaults.  Only noise reduction adjustments were made.

The DeepPrime seems very promising, with good details preserved. I guess the shots I provided were not that much of a challenge for it though, because although ISO was going up to 8000-12800 the R6 was handling it quite well that the original pics didn't have that much noise to start with. Maybe I'll try with some darker situations to see the true potential of the engine.

Thanks, we're very fortunate to have a (at least somewhat) functional government with correct methods of handling this right from the beginning. So after 1-2 months of shutting down everything, we're now able to safely operate at full capacity. Best of luck to you guys, hopefully more and more people realize that the stricter the method, the better outcome it would give. And probably a working vaccine soon as well 👋
