600d Remote Bulb Action seems wrong
1

HI,

I've just bought a second hand 600d for astrophotography and I have some misundestanding about the remote bulb action.

I am using a remote Neewer intervalometer and also APT (astro Photography Tool).

On occasions after switching the camera on and  putting into M, when I use the Neewer remote (in manual) it opens the shutter on the first press and closes it on the second. I don't belive this is supposed to be the way it works.

If I then use APT and take a few shots the shutter works as expected ie it stays open for the expected duration and then closes.

If I then use the Neewer intervalometer Pressing the button opens the shutter and then on releasing the button the shutter closes.

Is this an expected behaviour. It's almost as if there is setting that changes the operation of the remote shutter? I can't find anything in the manual.

Kind regards

Andy

That does sound a bit odd, assuming this is a wired remote that plugs into the camera.

If that is the case then try using the remote without any batteries, that will ensure that the intervalometer side of it isn't interfering or that you have it set up incorrectly.

It may help if you could let us know the model number of the remote control.

Hi Ray,

The intervalometer is wired and the model is Neewer URS-7000. At the time it was so repeatable that I thought I had to buy a new intervalometer.

I the intervalometer successfully works on an OMD10 MkII so I don't think it's that.

This occurred after charging the battery so I'll removed the battery for a few hours and repeat the test.

The strange action has been intermittent and resembles the wireless remote functioning. It's a second hand camera with 2600 shutter release so shouldn't be worn out.

The other thing I did notice was that after taking some astro pics was that after some 40 pics the camera stared behaving strangely, it took the main 40sec image and then a short one which could have been the delay or anti vibration delay. I didn't investigate much further as I'm new to astro pics and there haven't been many clear, moonless nights over the last few weeks.

I'll try it with the batteries out of the intervalometer after I put the battery back in the camera and see what happens.

Thanks

Andy

So I've tried it out and no problem with the intervalometer batteries in or not.

So I'll just have to see how it goes.

I just wonder if there is some setting that changes the bulb action.

Or was there some signal received on the front remote sensor input that confused it?

Cheers

Andy

Make sure you have "long exposure noise reduction" in camera menu turned off otherwise it can take a second blank exposure which it then uses to subtract the noise from the first image.

HI Ray,

The "long exposure noise reduction" it is off at the moment but High ISO speed noise reduction is set to standard. I'm using ISO 800 so I don't know if that will affect it.

The strange thing is that using Astro photography tool it took some 40 images before behaving strangely.

On a second run it didn't go wrong at all even after 40~50 shots.

I'll keep an eye on it and see if it causes a problem again.

Thanks for your help

Hi All,

Just to round off this thread it appears to be mirror lock up caused the problem.

One click to lock up another to open the shutter and the second one being a short press closed the shutter and so it appeared to me that it's one to open and one to close.

I eventually cleared the mirror lock option and it works OK now.

Kind regards

Andy
