Next lens: Sony 135mm GM vs. Sigma 24-70 F2.8 vs. Sony FE 24-105G vs. ?

I assume I already have a decent lens portfolio and to be honest already feel sometimes to have too much lenses. Nevertheless I often feel to lack something in between and more versatile.

My kit is very complete on the wide end with: 24GM, Batis 40 and 12-24G. Most times the Batis 40 is on my camera, the other two are more special lenses. I like them all.

On the Tele side I have the FE 70-300, which I bought one week after release when it was the longest E Mount Tele. I use if sometimes but not very often. Especially as it is already heavy with 854 Gram and I do not need 300mm very often and it is already "dark".

Nevertheless i feel to miss something. On A6500 I had the 16-70Z zoom which was good and versatile allrounder. Most times I used the the widest (16 - approx. 24mm) and the most upper end of the 16-70Z fully zoomed to 70mm. Of course the lens is not very bright with F4 but for travel it is a good compromise. I still use it sometimes on the A7R4 (especially during travel to be lightweight) but of course it does use a small portion of the sensor.

So I feel the need to add something that fills the upper gap coming from widest end to 40mm that are filled perfectly and having a mid class tele zoom that I do not use that often.

I am thinking about:

- Sony 135mm GM -> not versatile of course, but feels great in the hand and somehow impresses me

- Samyang or Sigma 85mm F1.4

- Sigma 24-70 F2.8

- Sony FE 24-105G

- some other versatile lens?

What do you think? I am a bit cought in the trap where I do not really know what to get is right.

Don’t think you need more lenses. If anything I would probably add the 200-600

*Pulls up the Sig*

24/40 primes, 12-24 wide angle, 70-300 telephoto

Um... both?

If you want a one-lens outdoor zoom kit, 24-105/4. If you want something you can bring inside, Sigma 24-70, but I don't think that's one lens.

If you want to finish the prime trinity, Sigma 85 is a pretty nice lens.

For what *I* do, I'd say 24-105 over 85, but dang is this a nice lens.

If you feel the 70 - 300 is alrezdy hezvy, forget about the 24 70 gm.

The 135 is awsome but very narrow usage.

The 24-105 is a nice choise but I would take the tamron 28-200 as you are fully covered below 28. You get f2.8 up to 35mm. And f4 up to 105. And of course you get the 200mm. A unique versatile lens.

This is a modern lens, cheap, with IQ as good as the sony.

And for money you save. Get the sony 85mm f1.8. Cheap too and incredible lens.

It's about what you shoot, I guess. I have a small family of Sony lenses, from the 16-35f2.8 through to the 100-400 and 1.4x. What stays on my camera most of all is the 24-105f4. It's a gorgeously useable lens and unless I'm aiming for a deliberately wide landscape, or a telephoto bird shot, or perhaps an insect with my 90f2.8macro... the 24-105f4 does it all.

But it really is about what you shoot.

I was going to suggest something similar. Sell the 70-300 and get the Tamron 28-200. If you find you are using it a lot but need a larger aperture you can look at the excellent - but heavy - Sigma 24-70.

There's a reason a 24-70 2.8 is part of a 'trinity'....

A high qualify 24-70 2.8 zoom provides for a great deal of versatility. They are great for so many reasons - travel and events chief among them for me. You probably don't need one if you generally shoot static subjects where you time to change lenses when necessary. If that's the case, you might want a specialty lens like the 135 1.8 instead of the zoom.

For me, I can't imagine not having a quality zoom for vacation travel or for live events where I have to respond to what's happening quickly.

I think the choice probably comes down to how much convenience you want to give yourself.

Finally, not to say people don't like the 24-105 but I think you'll see plenty of reviews that lead to the conclusion the 24-70 2.8 will provide higher quality images than the 24-105.

Given that you have the A7R4, the 135 GM would be my choice - it is the sharpest, and can readily resolve pixel level sharpness on that body.

yes, it is not as versatile as a zoom, but you can crop the images a long way.

Seems better than yet another lens duplicating the wide end.

I have (or had) all the lenses you are considering.  They are all good, but the GM135 is the one that produces the most crowd-pleasing shots and the one I would choose.

Like Mark, I find my 24-104 being used most of the time.  It's a stellar performer whether shooting stills or video.  I have used it in dark unlit mud-huts in Africa shooting documentaries with fantastic results.

I'll put another vote in for the 24-105.  It's a great lens in its own right, but more to the point, if what you feel like you're missing is the "versatile all-rounder" that was your 16-70 f/4 on APS-C, then the 24-105 is that lens for FE.

Fwiw, it compares quite favorably as an option for the A7R4 here .

Until about a month ago, the 135GM was at the very top of my list of "wow" lenses. The thing is just so sharp... That was until the Sigma 85mm DN made it's way into our hands. Now it's the Sigma 85mm that sits very comfortably at the top of my wow list. It's the sharpest lens I've ever seen, seeming to edge-out even the 135GM in most real-world results. Though it's very close, the Sigma just seems to resolve more fine details, like texture and pours on faces. Shooting wide-open already basically maxes-out any Sony sensor with both lenses. The AF is perfect; swift, silent, and accurate. To be honest, both of these lenses are absolutely in a class of their own in all aspects, but it's the size, weight, and cost that make the Sigma an absolute superhero.

You have GAS

buy whatever you will use with frequency and sell what you don’t use.
you will save thousands of dollars by not buying a what if lens.
Of course it’s your money to spend but to me I want to make my money and photography work in my favor
