Replacing FE 28 and FE 55 to FE 35/1.8, or not?

Hi everyone! My first Sony prime back in 2018 was FE55/1.8, and I really enjoyed it. But at this moment the focal range around 50 mm has become somewhat crowded in my kit:

  • Tamron 17-28
  • Sony FE28/2
  • Sony FE55/1.8
  • Jupiter-9 85/2

So I'm thinking about making it less dense, by replacing 28/2 and 55 to FE35/1.8. All three are good performers, according to various reviews, though not stellar. I need compact dimensions above all in such a lens, therefore no F1.2-1.4 is possible. FE35/1.8 is not very expensive in my region, and selling the 55ZA would cover about 80% of the 35's cost.

What's your opinion regarding this replacement?

It totally depends on your shooting style. Doesn't make much sense to ask this to others.
Do you crop on your 28mm to get to a 35mm often? Do you feel the 55 is too close and go for the 28mm instead regularly?
I tried the 35mm 1.4 and 55mm for a weekend to see the one I would like the most and for my job the 35 made more sense, but for personal work 55 was a much better fit. They are quite different lenses.

To my personal taste, the difference between two neighbors in the list (28-35-55-85 mm) would be quite minimal in terms of shooting experience. The problem is, both FE28 and FE55 are used quite rarely, as often it looks more compelling to take 17-28 or 85 mm respectively.

I haven't used the 28, but I replaced my 55 with a 45 to make a 24/45/85 trinity and think I want to pick up a 35 to both play the "middle" of the trinity on occasion and also pair as a 2-lens kit with the 85.  Woodland in particular loves a 35/85 pair.

Unless you shoot the primes wide open a lot, what about the 28-75/2.8?

If you don't use them sell them.  You might not need a 35 either, if you are ok with the 17-28 @28.

I ran FE28 and ZA55 combo for years enjoyed the setup. I moved on and sold both to acquire FE35. I like it a lot and believe its better lens overall than previous 2 lens setup I had. ZA55 was my favorite but lacking in close focus was my only gripe where FE35 solves the problem.

I added on SY18 to cover occasional UWA and FE85 for short tele / portrait gigs.

FE35 lives 90% on my camera and it's a great everyday lens.

The best gear is the one you have at that moment.

No, that's definitely not a suitable lens for me. For regular shooting I'll prefer prime lens over standard zoom seven days a week. UWA or telephoto is entirely different story. Besides, I need a compact and lightweight standard lens for the occasions when camera dimensions matter.

If you only pick one, then 35 or 40mm makes sense.  There are a lot of options in FE mount.  Smallest is Samyang 35/2.8, best all-round option is Sony 35/1.8.  The 35 & 40mm Noktons have the widest shooting envelope for the weight, if you are happy with MF.

I'd pick the 35/1.8, but I already have the 28-75/2.8 and the Tamron 35/1.4.  The Tamron 35/2.8 beats the Sony 35/2.8 on everything, apart from size.

Re: Replacing FE 28 and FE 55 to FE 35/1.8, or not?

It's absolutely subjective, but the combo 17-28 and 35 and 85 seems very good to me. From my (short) photography experience, looking for ideal lens kit is a very long path and your ideal set would be probably different over the years, but it's also part of the fun...I guess. Maybe not for your wife and wallet 😁😁

Yeah, the FE35/1.8 looks like the most rational choice so far. Given the fact that it'll be also used on APS-C camera, where 40 mm lens translates into somewhat weird 60 mm.

Unless more positive reviews for SY35/1.8 emerge, which is even smaller, being really nice optically.

I'd wait a while before buying the Samyang.

Just bought FE35/1.8 and sold 55/1.8.
