Dell XPS 15 FHD+ 16GB/512GB laptop option
1

I am strongly leaning toward this latest XPS 15 for photo editing and am mainly looking for inputs into considerations especially ones I've not considered.

Currently it is $1660

https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-laptops/new-xps-15-laptop/spd/xps-15-9500-laptop/xn9500ecxns

Or I could get the 32GB/1TB version for $1960.

Considerations:

FHD vs. UHD: FHD seems more practical and I can/will use external mon.

I've used full gamut Adobe RGB monitors before and liked the result (I print with front to end calibration) but think I don't want UHD display as it would be too fine a pixel on 15" and I can (or will) use external monitor. My eyesight is relatively poor.

16GB vs. 32GB: 16GB should be fine for all but the most complex still editing, is that correct?

512GB vs.? : Enough for OS/SW and recent images, but more storage will be a necessity.

Ideally I'd have the both a 512GB plus a larger 1TB 2nd one but not sure if the XPS can take two. I am OK with not having all my images local and using external drives.

Yeah I want a laptop vs. better value desktop.

[My current way out of date desktop (QX9650 processor, 4GB RAM, multiple storage drives largest being 1TB) primarily runs Capture One with 24MP RAW files but expect larger in near future. With so little memory it struggles with stuff like many layers but surprisingly works for most editing with occasionally a bit of patience.]

Looks fine to me; I have an earlier version, more basic XPS 15 FHD that's been excellent for my needs. I don't regret the FHD choice at all.

I wouldn't try to talk you out of FHD, but just a slight alternative view: the text is no smaller on a 4K screen, as Windows automatically scales text.  The default scaling on 4k 15 inch is 250%, which makes text just as readable as on a FHD screen.  In fact to my eyes (normal vision but nothing special) text is clearer on a 4k screen, as each character is made up of more pixels, and they are better formed on the screen.

However, there are still a few programs that don't scale well, and FHD is slightly simpler.

I have a four year old XPS 15.6" 9550 with a 1TB SSD and the 4K display.  From experience I can tell you 4K display looks great.  The laptop can drive monitors up to 4K with no problems - I've occasionally hooked it to my LG 27" 4K and it looks as good as my desktop's RTX 1060 video board.  I'm glad I got the 1TB drive and have had a few times that wasn't big enough.  Most of my space is consumed by photos and some videos.  The price with the 4K looks pretty good...I had to bargain real hard 4 years ago to get mine for $2000 (normal prices was $2400 back then).

I have mine setup to run at 100% CPU/brightness when on A/C and up to 50% CPU/brightness on battery so it is screaming fast on A/C and I can usually get close to 5 hours on battery.  At 100% on battery I get 2 hours or slightly less.  The M.2 SSD is really fast - I get transfers from SD cards pretty close to the rated speed on the cards (93M/s).

On thing to be aware of if they have not changed it - the SSD version comes with a bigger battery therefore you can't put a 2nd drive in the laptop.

It is back in stock now and I will get 32GB/1TB FHD+

Have a choice between i7-10750H (6 core) or i7-10875H (8 core) for $100 more. Any thoughts?

I ordered the XPS15  i7-10875, 32GB memory, 1TB SSD, 15" FHD+ monitor all for ~$2k with tax.  It will be delivered Dec. 30 which gives me plenty of time to have buyers second guessing

I probably would have preferred a 2TB SDD, but that option was not available.
