Your K70 is very likely a typical "lemon". As I remember, you already had some intermittent problems with LCD.

Anyway, if the aperture solenoid is faulty, then it should not work properly regardless the exposure mode. Some users however found out that the aperture tends to work "more properly" in the LV mode.

Yes, I'm using the aperture ring, on both A and M lenses.

Then is the aperture operated more mechanically on M; but electrically via the solenoid on A ?

The solenoid opens the aperture and then closes it for the shot. If it is not working then setting the lens to a value on the aperture ring will cause it to be at that stop, like a permanent DOF preview.
