Purchasing a second hand Fuji Xe2
1

Hi Guys,

Im new to this forum! Ive been doing a lot of research into the Fuji Xe2 system camera, but i cant find any suitable answers online so i wanted to post my questions on this forum. Hope anyone can help me out here

Ive been using Canon gear for over a decade now, but want to switch to something smaller to 'go along with it'. Im in the market for either a used Fuji Xe2 or Xe1, budget wise i cant really afford a new camera (like a Xe3 or X-3 for that matter).

I really love the rangefinder style that Fuji has done with the Xe line. However, ive read that video shooting is a weak point. Now, i occasionally shoot some video, the Xe2 and Xe1 are essentially the same camera's sensor wise.

However, in reviews online its said that with the Xe2 you cant set manually exposure in video mode, is this true? Are there any Xe2 video shooters that would like to share their experiences with this camera?

Thanks in advance!

I have an X-E2s and cannot do video in manual mode.  Not that I care about video.

I own the X-E2S. My opinion is that you should absolutely forget about video with the X-E2. Fujifilm's video is now amazing, but those older cameras had awful video performance.

Welcome Nicolas!

If video is a big requirement, then you will need to get a newer model Fuji.  I haven't shot video with my X-E2s, but my understanding is that is sets the ISO automatically. I guess you can vary exposure on a limited basis with exposure compensation, but that generation of Fuji have limited video settings and capability. You'll need to step up to the X-E3 for more extensive video capability.

However, if primarily shoot stills, the X-E2 is a great little camera.  I have the X-E2s, X-E3 and X-H1.  I often reach for the X-E2s instead of the others.

If you do go for it, try to find the X-E2s. I had the X-E2, which I gave to my grandson and feel the difference between the two is worth paying a little extra.  Be warned, though, I have a Canon system and bought the X-E3 to "go along with it" and I don't shoot with my 5D2 body anymore, though I do use some of my Canon lenses on my Fuji bodies via the Fringer Pro adapter.

If you're interested in video on budget, don't buy Fuji. Only the newest models have good video capabilities. You may try Panasonic micro 4/3 or Sony (more expensive).

You can use either Auto ISO, or choose one in particular.

I have an X-E2 that I haven't used in several years and honestly didn't remember it even had a video capability!  For stills it's a very capable camera.

Yikes, not al lot of positivity on the video side...

Is the Xe3, XT100 or XT20 better for video?

Re: Purchasing a second hand Fuji Xe2

Depends how much you pay, I wouldn't go over $200 for one at this point... better to get used XE3 or XT 20...newer sensor, 16-> 24 mp bump, and some other goodies on that generation.

I would def not recommend the XE2 for video... My Nikon D5300 was better than it for that, by a good margin. They came out around the same time.

Have you checked out prices on the XT1?

X-E3 or XT-20 would be much better, but not as good as the current generation Fujis. Too bad you missed the X-E3 clearance sale.

BTW, I found this YouTube video shot with the X-E2:

Re: Purchasing a second hand Fuji Xe2

Thanks for all the replies, very helpful! So no Xe2 for me then

Hows the XT1 for video? They fo for around €250 second hand in my region, so that would be a option for me. I dont shoot video ALL the time but i do like to use it now and then.

A new XE3 isnt being sold in my country anymore sadly. Maybe i should save up for a couple of months and wait for a nice second hand Xe3, Xt20 or something like that.

Or maybe there are better options in Fuji?

XE3 is very good for video. Maybe 10 minutes of 4K at a time. Probably same for XT20. The latter's screen may come in handy for video, especially if using a tripod.

The Panasonic G7 was a bargain on sale for £330 new a few years ago, so maybe you can find one now in your budget for 30 minutes of 4K video, awesome ergonomics and a fully articulating screen, which I used all the time for tripod video.

Unfortunately the XT1 is the same generation as the XE2 and has all the same limitations.

Basically you want to avoid any 16mp Fuji if you’re interested in video.

Any 24mp camera (x-trans 3) from 2016 or later will be much better for your needs.  The cheapest of these would be an XT20 or XE3, but don’t rule out a bargain on the XT2 as this has higher quality 4K video in addition to better build and nicer EVF etc.

Thanks for all the replies guys, really appreciate it. I guess ill try to save up some more for a used Xe3 or XT20, somewhere along those lines. Switching to Sony or Panasonic is no option, since i already own some Fuji glass that im very eager to use! Ive heard nothing but positivity in that area so im already looking forward to my first mirrorless!

If you are interested in video, try for a used X-E3. The X-E2 generation cameras are mediocre in that area.

Hi Guys, just a small update for all who are interested! Just purchased a Fuji XT20. I got a really nice deal, a second hand body in absolute mint condition with all the accessories and original box included. Plus one year warranty from the store i got it from! Camera looks brand new, took it out for a forest walk yesterday and im very happy with it. Its completely different from what im used to, but i guess thats just a matter of time. Still learning!

Another thank you for all the advice! This thread can be closed (if necessary)

Re: Purchasing a second hand Fuji Xe2

Congrats on your purchase. All the replies to the OP have been really useful. I'm also looking at buying secondhand having never owned a camera and was considering something from Fujifilm to make use of their film simulations and jpegs. I would like to create an online portfolio and learn editing techniques. How has your experience been using the camera and editing in post?

I hadn't considered an X-E3 or X-T20 but was considering the 23mm f2 lens as a starting point for landscape and documentary style photography and video. Do you have any views on handling with different lens attached?

Was there any reason you decided to get the classic style camera over the rangefinder style camera?

Thanks!

Re: Purchasing a second hand Fuji Xe2

If you are settled on small Fuji bodies like the xe3 and xt20, I can recommend the 27/2.8 to keep the package light. I was comparing between the two bodies in the past and came to the conclusion that the only relevant differences are physical: check the dials, shape, button layout to see which one is to your liking. Note that xe3 being a rectangle makes a huge difference in how pocketable it is. It’s profile is about the shape of an iPhone 7 if not slightly smaller. You can feel the design decisions Fuji made to make it as flush and tiny as possible, which may or may not matter to you.

Re: Purchasing a second hand Fuji Xe2

I'd rather carry it around and don't mind throwing it in a backpack at the end of a day. Something that feels comfortable is probably top of my list.

I would like something dedicated for taking stills and time-lapses.

The deciding factor is likely going to be price which is the reason for buying secondhand. I can't afford to go full frame and probably don't need full frame either.

I have considered the APS-C format cameras from Sony, Nikon and Canon but don't know if they offer the same qualities or lens support at the same price as Fujifilm?

Hi! Sorry for my late reply, hope its still useful for you.

Ive been using my used XT20 for almost 3 weeks now. My experiences on the body are merely positive. Its alot smaller then a DSLR, which was my intention from the start. I really wanted something i could easily take along on trips, and for street photography.

I havent held the XE3 in my hands, but they are pretty much the same size. The XT20 is a bit thicker and has a flash, the XE3 doesn't (you do, however, get a flash included that you can put on the hot shoe mount). My choice for the XT20 was based on the price (i could get one fairly cheap in absolute mint condition) and the fact that it has a tilting screen (the XE3 doesn't have one). Now, that is a huge plus! Especially if you shoot landscapes (low angles) and street photography. It allows you to roam the streets anonymously because you don't HAVE to look into the viewfinder all the time (and scaring people away).

I also wanted something that could shoot 4K video. If youre going for Fuji, the choices are limited in second hand camera's (unless you have alot to spend). Its basically the XT20/30, XT2 or the XE3.

The film simulations are fun to use, but useless if you shoot RAW since it doesn't use the color profile. You can, in Photoshop, reverse it to the camera profile you like. I like to use ACROSS for street, and Velvia for landscapes. Then tweak it a bit in Photoshop.

The lens you're mentioning sounds like a good one. Im using the 16-50 IOS II lens myself, which was (if im correct) the kitlens for a while. I recently purchased a mount adapter so i can use my Canon glass on the Fuji.

All in all: the camera produces super sharp images. It has a lot of great futures that are super useful. It does take a while to get used to. It feels alot more like a compact camera then a DSLR and also operates that way. The size and weight are really a plus, cause who wants to carry a bulky DSLR right? The build quality of my XT20 is superb, it really feels like a PRO camera. The viewfinder is nice and bright, but does lag a bit. As mentioned before the tilting screen is useful, and the color profiles are nice. Especially ACROSS and Velvia.

If you can pick one up for a good price i would go for it. Like i said: i havent used the XE3, but they are pretty much the same camera's (sensor wise, and option wise). If i remember correctly Maarten Heilbron has done a one-to-one comparison on YouTube, you might want to check that out. Good luck!
