Fujifilm S5 pro

Hi there, my ancient memory card will not format properly and shows zero frames available. I have followed instructions from the manual but it does not work. What can I do to resolve this problem. I put the photos on a computer with a cable. I deleted all photos then tried formatting. Still showing FULL! Would appreciate a solution. This a new camera for me and it is just one challenge after another

Having owned and hassled with digital cameras for a while I have a few suggestions, but I haven't owned a S5.

My guess is you used the computer to delete the photos, rather than using the camera for this.  Earlier cameras get very confused by this stuff.  Deletion should happen only in the camera.

I assume you are trying to format the card using the camera.  It isn't a good idea to try to format using the computer, while the camera and computer are connected with a cable.

You could try to copy one of the photos to the card from the computer, then see if you can view that photo using the camera.  If so, it might format.  Do not use the computer to format the card.

I guess you have already tried the usual things:  1) Remove the card and check to be sure the file protect switch on the card is set to read/write (its normal position).  2) Put the SD card in a SD reader and put it in the computer and format the card in the computer, then try to format it in the camera and 3) for any action, battery in camera must be fully charged.

Good luck with all this!

Hi Holly,

It took reading the other poster's post to realize the S5 Pro uses CF cards.   Use a flashlight to look into the CF slot.  Is a pin bent or missing?  You can also check the CF card for the pin from the camera stuck in the card.

I hope my hunch is wrong,

Good luck,

Morris

Re: Fujifilm S5 pro

I've owned cameras with CF cards.  Didn't think that the S5 would have them!

I always worried about pins bending in the camera!  Never happened to me though.  I guess I was just lucky.

The S5 Pro is a Fuji modified Nikon D200.  I owned and loved my D200.  I never had a pin bend or break inside a camera though it did happen to one of my card readers.  The pin got stuck inside a Microdrive.  Had to extract the pin with a knife and then a tweezers.

Some compact flash cards have a write protect switch on them. You should look for a little switch on the edge of the card. None of the cards have them but many do.

Some do. Actually I have several that do. Try Google.

Get a new card, and it's better to format cards in the camera as opposed to with your computer.

Here’s an example from DigiKey:

https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/a/apacer/industrial-cf-6-compactflash

CF is used in hundreds of other products beside photographic cameras. Actually not many cameras use them these days. The CF cards have been around longer than digital cameras. The reason some of them have a write protect switch is to ensure that a device cannot corrupt or overwrite its boot device.

Again not all the cards have them, and if you have like newer Transcend or other types of cheaper consumer grade memory it might not have it. But actually the Kodak ones that came with my DCS Pro back had write protect switches.

I just went down and opened the Pelican case containing my (now seldom-to-never used) FinePix Pro S2. ALL of the “period correct” CF cards — mostly SanDisk and Lexar — have the write protect tab and until you claimed otherwise I was under the impression, based on my past experience, that this was standard for the medium. Granted, the S2 is the last CF equipped camera I’ve owned, having made the switch to MFT instead of a “modern” DSLR and (with the purchase of an X100v) now moving towards a Fujifilm quiver.

As you say, “interesting.”

This is the “best practice” that I learned and follow — Format the card in the device you intend to write (record) with. It contradicts the suggestion made at the top of this thread. The exception is that I have used a computer to perform a low-level format on a “bad” card, but I then re-format the card in the camera before use.  However, the more hoops I have to jump through the more likely I am to just bin the card and replace it with one that isn’t giving me problems. Why ask for trouble?  (Fortunately, since switching to SD family cards I genuinely can’t recall having any issues — touch wood.)

Yes I think you are right, I have the computer back and it doesn't even read the fuji. so I couldn't put the photos back on even if I tried. Is it possible to get these older cards then. I shall try to order online. Then i will be very careful next time

Thank you
