p900 vs p1000 questions
1

I'm interested in 3 things about these 2 cameras:

1. Auto focus ability

2. Subject tracking

3. Hi iso "noise" level

Does either camera have an advantage over the other? I'm aware of the other advantages of p1000 (better viewfinder, more zoom, raw, etc.) but am only interested in these 3 things?

Does one cam have an upgrade or advantage over the other in these 3 areas or are they the same?

Thanks folks,

Roger

Both the P900 & P1000 auto-focus works similar,

it works "okay" for being a superzoom bridge camera,

but don't expect the same as a DSLR or Mirrorless body.

2. Subject tracking

Both the P900 & P1000 works best for stationary subjects.

However, the P1000 camera can be used with a "dot sight" (the P900 cannot).

3. Hi iso "noise" level

To reduce the noise, and to preserve the details,

can set the Sharpening to "0" (zero), and set the Noise Reduction to "low".

The below pictures are all "out-of-camera" jpegs, and not post processed.

(See example pictures below.)

1. P900 @ iso1600

P900 @ iso1600

2. P1000 @ iso800

P1000 @ iso800

This below night-time picture from the P1000 camera,

had set the Sharpening to "(A)uto", and set the Noise Reduction to "high".

3. P1000 @ iso3200

P1000 @ iso3200

Does either camera have an advantage over the other? I'm aware of the other advantages of p1000 (better viewfinder, more zoom, raw, etc.) but am only interested in these 3 things?

Re: p900 vs p1000 questions

Thank you for your response. I was wondering how those 2 cameras directly compare, to each other, on those 3 points...are they identical, or does the p1000 have any of those 3 points upgraded? Case in point, I had the p900 and loved it, took it with me everywhere. I then bought the p1000 and tbh I find the p1000 cumbersome to carry around and was thinking about "going back" to the p900.  I'm not sure any of my 3 points are improved in the p1000 so thought I'd check with you guys first in case I missed something. So do you notice any of my 3 points different on those 2 cameras, or are they the same? BTW, I really enjoy your photos, well done.

Thanks again,

Roger

The P900 camera was released in 2015.

The P1000 camera was released in 2018.

..

Yes, the P1000 have some "upgrades" over the P900,

they both uses the same 16mp image sensor,

but the P1000 have an upgraded processor,

and also the P1000 have an upgraded lens.

..

It's good you have owned & used both the P900 & P1000,

and I can understand the reasons why you may prefer the P900.

The P1000 is definitely not for everyone, because it is bigger & heavier.

My suggestion is, if you want the best of both worlds of the P900 & P1000,

then to seriously consider the (new) P950 camera, as it is the best of both worlds.

..

Cheers!

Yea, I was considering the p950....weight and size seems to be between the other 2..I'll need to get one in hand to see if it works for me.

Thanks again

I believe this statement is incorrect.

P900 uses a standard CMOS sensor, while P1000 uses a BSI sensor (backside illumination).
The latter one has slightly higher sensitivity in comparison to the format one.

I think the sensor informations can be confusing,

and it's not as clear cut as the APS-C & Full-Frame.

..

See the below screen captures,

shows the model & sensor infos.

..

1. P1000

2. P950

3. P900

..

And seems the P610 & P600 may be using a slightly different sensor (16.1mp).

4. P610

5. P600

..

And of course, not to forget the "odd-ball", the B700 (20.3mp, which I adore by the way).

6. B700

..

Cheers!

Re: p900 vs p1000 questions

Again, I wish there is a list of smaller-size sensor listings for the Nikon cameras, such as the one's available for the larger-size sensors.

..

Cheers!

Re: p900 vs p1000 questions

Hmmm...

I remember reading somewhere that P900 does not have the BSI sensor. It was a long time ago (very soon after I bought P1000), and I don’t really remember the source.

Since I cannot back up my statement with anything else but a faint memory, I am going to retract it.

No worries!

I don't know why these sensor informations are such a mystery.

As I'm not even sure which manufacturer makes them (?).

Could the manufacturer be Sony (?) or Tower Jazz (?).

Cheers!
