Canon EF 50mm F/2.5 Macro shows 1:1 on lens barrel?

In the official specs of "Canon EF 50mm F/2.5 Macro", the max magnification is 1:2.

On the lens barrel, when extended, there's a mark 1:1. Does that mean the lens can produce 1:1 magnification?

I am a bit confused about this. Thanks guys.

The manual states on the Nomenclature section that the magnification scale shows the magnification with the life size converter lens attached. Thus if you do not have it on the macro, you need to divide the numbers on the magnification scale by 2. That wasn't easy to find without careful attention.

+1 that the magnifications marked on the extending barrel are with the Canon Life Size Converter EF attached.

Without the converter, the magnification is read from the yellow #s in the focus scale window (lower left of your picture).   As shown, 1:1 with the converter, 1:2 without.

I own this lens along with the life size convertor.  As stated above, the markings assume the convertor is attached.  There is an interesting side note regarding the convertor.  Although Canon says it is made exclusively for the EF 50mm f/2.5 lens it will work on other EF lenses.  I have verified this myself.  So purchasing the convertor pays off in other ways.  Also, there doesn't seem to be much of an IQ penalty using the convertor from what I can tell.
