Canon 32mm f1.4 or Sigma 56mm f1.4 for portraits - Colour?
2

Hi all,
I am thinking about buying either of these lenses for portraits. While the focal length of the sigma may be more to my liking for what I want to do, I am a little sceptical in regards to colour output. I have seen some reviews where it was stated that the sigma lens produces cooler colours that are not as attractive as the canon lens.
Does anyone have experience with both lenses and can share their recommendation? I am using an M50 and the only prime lens I have thus far is the 22mm f2.
Many thanks in advance!

They are the 2 best lenses for M...Sigma 56 would be the better choice if purely for portraits (I'm not aware of any colour issues) but 32mm is a more versatile lens...the choice is yours...just get both

They are both much better than the 22mm btw (which is great for a pancake lens).

If you shoot raw you can change the colors to suit you. If you shoot jpeg, you can still have some settings in camera which might help achieve what you want. A small white balance change will produce warmer colors.

I would rather be worried if the lens isn't sharp, it misses focus, it has nasty chromatic aberrations, has hard to correct distortions or has poor contrast.

But Sigma 56mm seems better suited to portraits, unless you plan to shoot just whole body portraits.

I just want to add that yes, the Sigma has a cooler tone to things, which i dont mind. I think it offsets the Canon yellow/green tint in the raw files.

Additionally the 32mm (50mm) is one of my favorite portrait focal lengths. 50 and 85 equivalent are my ideal combo. So its a really hard pick... its even harder because both are the sharpest lenses on the system.

I have both, and think both are excellent. I haven't really noticed a color difference, but I always shoot RAW (except for some sports), and import into Lightroom with custom settings, which probably erases any color differences. If you're shooting RAW, you can tune the color to your liking pretty easily. With JPEG, it's a hit harder, but still entirely possible. I would go with whichever focal length suits you best, but also plan on getting both eventually, because they are stellar lenses.

As the length of a thread approaches 150, the probability that someone will make the obvious "it's not the camera, it's the photographer" remark approaches 1.

+1 Love them both.  Thanks go to Alastair for being such a good promoter last year (I bought the Sigmas on his recommendation).

I too am a RAW-only shooter, so any needed color adjustments get done in post anyway (DPP).

So go with whichever focal length suits you best first.  Then be prepared to want the other as well.    They’re both a joy to use.

I'd go with the 32mm. I had the 56mm and returned it. Cooler is one word, but I'd also use the word bland. With the M50, the 32mm will be on there full time. With the 56mm you'll have to swap a lot and spend a lot of hours trying to get the colors perfect - hours you could be spending sleeping or spending time with family or finding a partner. I used the M50 and the 32mm all the time. My favorite combo for amazing colors without any fine tuning if video is of no interest. I could sell all my gear and just have that combo and be fine. I'd buy another camera for 4K video though.

I mean those things are pretty subjective, and i don't think it takes a long time to warm up or touch up a photo.

Original

Adding my own Capture one Preset, takes all of 2 seconds.

Or just slap on a film simulation on Polarr (color artifacts because i use low quality Jpegs on my camera)
