Pany G9 vs Oly EM1 Mk III: which all round camera advice?

I am still shooting with my EM1 Mk I, EM5 MK II, and Pany GX7. Been mainly a photographer, shooting travel, family and some wildlife. Occasionally, I would shoot video. However, now with my first granddaughter, I want to shoot more video.  Something I regretfully did not do as much with my daughter, as it was only VHS-C/

Given the greatly discounted price on both G9 and the Mk III, for those who have used both cameras, which of the two is a better overall camera when considering video shooting might be 50%?

I have seen videos comparing the G9 with the GH5 with the G9 getting a really good firmware update making it almost a toss up between the two.I have also sen several video reviews of both the G9 and Mk III giving the Mk III the overall edge.

I love my EM-1 Mk I even though I have had to replace the rear dial and EVF.  The camera still feels great in my hand and I am comfortable with its operation; had it since it first came out.

I use/own both brands of lenses, but relied heavily on my Oly 12-40 when traveling. I also use the Oly 9-18,, Pany 45-150 (on the GX7) and several Oly and Pany primes on a routine basis, leaving the Oly 40-150 f2.8 and Pany 100-300 when shooting wildlife.  I know I may have to get different lenses if video ever becomes a primary medium.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I am pretty sure that you will end up with the E-M1.3 which is a very, very good choice. Moreover, you are already heavily invested into Oly gear and Oly culture. From Oly, I miss the composite modes, the possibility to associate a custom mode to a button and... yes, Workspace with which I was able to convert my photos to an edit resistant TIFF 16 bits  while retaining most of the in camera settings. Much less PP that way, if any.

I chose the G9 lately for myself. It just happened that I progressively sold all my Oly lenses prior to that decision, the very good ones, and kept the Panasonic lenses that I already had, also the very good ones. Moreover, I like the Lumix philosophy for the G9 better, especially the fact that they give us more latitude for creative choices. With the G9 I gained better ergonomics, to my taste, and infinite custom modes to simplify my shootings, hugely better video although that in the E-M1.3 can be enough for an occasional use. I like Lumix lenses better over all. They render with a more organic quality.

So, choose what make you happy.

In terms of the video, the fact that the G9 can shoot 60fps in 4K is a distinct advantage; it gives you the option of creating high quality slow motion in the rendered video. I also like the IS Lock feature which produces freakishly stable video when you don't need to pan your shot (ie: it's more stable than regular IS that works ok with panning).

Dpreview did a comparison video of the EM1.3 and G9 that might help you decide. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TB71SN-r25k&ab_channel=DPReview

I've been impressed with C-AF in the G9 with both the P-L 12-35/2.8 v!, and more recently the Oly 12-100/4.0 Pro. Unfortunately G9's phenomenal Video IS-lock doesn't function with the Oly, but it does with my smart adapted Canon 100-400-II when IBIS is used and OIS switch off on lens at startup. Go figure!

And the G9's low light performance is flat amazing in both stills and video. Below is link to short 4K60p video in my studio with very dimmed lighting - corners barely visible to naked eye - ISO 10,000, 12-35@ 35mm, f/2.8, 1/30 sec, demonstrating C-AF that for the most part is accurate with minimal pulsation in a range of 2-20'. Also absent is any trace of macro-blocking in shadows, with a fine-grain pattern, and the ability to produce a true photographic black of (R,G,B 0,0,0) in captured frames - thus excellent colors for the situation, as well as very good detail. At least 1 EV improvement over GH5 in IQ...

I think there's a $500+ difference between them. You might want to throw the Em1ii into the mix as the video features are identical to the markiii and its priced about the same as the G9. With the G9 you're getting a much larger and higher res evf than the olys and 2 uhs-ii card slots vs just 1 uhs-ii and 1 uhs 1 slot with the olys. Oly claims better ibis but they're both so good you'd be hard pressed to see the difference. Panny DFD works pretty well for CAF but the Oly will serve you better if you're planning to shoot video that way. I mostly use manual focus with peaking when I shoot with my G9.

Thanks for the replies.

So with the listed Oly lenses that I have, what kind of performance deterioration would I expect?  Is it only toward stabilization when shooting video, or will image stabilization be negatively impacted?

Also, for video shooting, what kind of lenses are typically recommended for a family setting?  I want to enjoy my granddaughter and be able to capture both still and video.

I've had the 12-35/2.8 forever so I can't compare it to the 12-60/2.8-4.  I find the 12-35 to work well indoors in most rooms where there are multiple pot lights in the ceiling (ie: not great for living rooms lit with, say, a couple of standing corner lamps).  In poorer light I'll use my 15/1.7 which is wide enough and fast enough for most indoor situations.

Just remember to use 24 or 30 fps when shooting in low light.

Yes, me too.  I don't usually use c-af for my videos but earlier this year I used it to film my daughter at some of her horse lessons and it did well tracking her as she rode towards and away from me. Since then, I used its face tracking AF for some birthday videos and it worked pretty well in that scenario, too.  Although I think I should've used tracking AF so it stuck with a singe person's face.

There's definitely an huge improve in AF vs. my GX7, G85 and GX9.

For everything but indoor/dim light I shoot video on my G9 with my trusty Oly 12-40 pro. Ibis is excellent in video and superior to what I observe with my (already great) em5ii using the same lens. For dimmer light I use the Pana/Leica 15mm 1.7 and zoom with my feet.

In my experience, video C-AF in the G9 with the 12-100/4.0 is unexpectedly very good - at least in the 4K60p I normally shoot - very little hunting or the 3-step polka.
