I hate Canon right now...

Hello,

I bought my first Canon device 7 years ago. I'm not a professional or very wealthy, so I chose 100D as it was designed just for people like me - cheap, with basic kit lenses and for amateurs. He served me faithfully and never betrayed me! But I decided it was time to raise the resolution a bit, so I stopped at 250D. Knowing what 100 was, it was very clear to me that I would love 250. I don't think of myself as a professional or an amateur, but according to my financial capabilities, I judged, that this device will work for me. I shoot street photography and recently I became passionate about landscape photography. The device was small and perfect for my needs.

But a few weeks ago, I became very passionate about portrait photography. And especially on Low key and street portrait photography. And here came MY BIG DISAPPOINTMENT, because I needed a flash .... why did Canon remove the FLASH PIN??? It's so outrageous that I have no words. This is a camera for beginners in a small price range, and now it turns out that it works only with Canon products - which are not very cheap for me. For a device for which I have spent around 360 pounds, I have to give the same amount - if not more, for a flash and a wireless trigger. Doing it on an amateur camera is a financial penalty. I checked and found no other manufacturer to have done the same thing. I didn't expect to play like that with clients... If I'm a professional and I can afford one of your top models, yes, then I can afford 30 or 40 per cent of the value of a flash camera. It's like buying a car, but the wipers cost as much as the car because other wipers are not compatible with the car. Are you going to buy this car??? It's unbelievable, I'm furious and I feel betrayed.

I have made a complaint directly to Canon and waiting for the answer!

Double-check and nowhere didn't find on the Canon page that they remove the pin!

Gonna keep you posted what they answer me.

Your car analogy should be more like I bought a small 2 passenger car with no trunk and now I want haul large construction equipment with it and I have no where in the back to load it or a hitch capable of pulling a trailer.

Canon's reply will irritate you even more.

I'm with you, this was a standard shoe and what they've done is a bad show.

That would only be a suitable analogy if every other small 2 passenger car was capable of pulling a trailer. I've never seen a camera with a standard size hot shoe that lacked the center pin before.

If I was in the OP's position I'd consider buying used Canon Speedlights in excellent condition.Should be  plenty around as many folk buy themas a must have item only to find they rarely use them.

What is a FLASH PIN? If you're talking about a PC sync terminal, I suspect very few beginners even know what that is. If you personally want one you can have it by using an adapter to put in the hot shoe.

Specifications rarely explain that a feature is not there. You normally have to look for it and see if it's there. However, Canon actually did publish the fact that the 250D does not have a PC sync terminal:

HotShoe / PC terminal: Yes / No

Oh yes, that will be interesting.

Re: I hate Canon right now...

The OP means the central standard contact in the hot shoe, not the socket, that is why it is a gotcha, why it isn't obvious, why you'd actually expect it to be there and why the OP is right to be cross.

I see now. That is pretty weird.

Re: I hate Canon right now...

Has the OP been online to see what's available that will work?  I just checked Amazon, and it seems most third party distributors are "wise to Canon's tricks" and selling cheap flashes that are compatible.

Sure, your classic Vivitar 283 might not work, but then again, it might have burned out the camera contacts in a modern camera anyway.

A little homework, maybe, before slamming a manufacturer?

Homework indeed - all the OP had to is look a photo of the camera to see that it doesn't have the center contact.  I'll admit though, I really don't like that they removed it.

... and rightly so. I consider myself a Canon fan, but that trick is shamefull, IMO.

This is an ISO standard hotshoe, but they silently crippled it and an amateur who is in photography for the pictures would have next to no information on it.

There's hope, though, as Godox has released several compatible speedlights and controllers.

Re: I hate Canon right now...

Doesn't surprise me, the 250D was a gongshow and a joke from the start, they changed almost nothing from the 200D.

If at all possible I'd say return the camera and see if the 200D does what you want.

Re: I hate Canon right now...

I don't blame you for being upset. Why wouldn't the camera have a standard Canon hot-shoe?

Doesn't make sense.

In fact, I wanted to buy 200D, but I found 250D new at a lower price, so I bought it. The strange thing is that at 200D there is exactly the same thing what they removed at 250D. Who would have thought that they would remove it ...

I did it, but as I said have become passionate about Low Key photography after I brought the camera. And even so, who can imagine that they are going to remove the pin?

Just to highlight -- Godox has compatible flash

Feel your pain. I was a Canon shooter onceuponatime but no more as they urinate on you and don't even have the courtesy of calling it the rain.
