What aspect ratios do Pentax users like?
2

This question was prompted by an article in "Black+White Photography":
Issue 243, page 72 onward.

The author, Eddie Ephraums, discusses the way some photographers concentrate mainly on a single aspect ratio, for example 1:1, 3:2, 2:1, 4:3, 16:9, 7:5, etc.
And may become well-known for it.

He made himself a simple adjustable hand-held viewer so that he could judge scenes without needing to look through a camera viewfinder.
(Using such a viewer is apparently commonplace in cine photography).

Some cameras can be adjusted so that different aspect ratios are seen in the viewfinder.
My K-1-series can be switched between aspect ratios, including 1:1.
My Ricoh GRIII can be set to 3:2 or 1:1.

And, of course, images can be cropped later in Lightroom or Photoshop.
Lightroom has several built in aspect ratios, as well as "Custom".

So back to the title of this thread:
"What aspect ratios do Pentax users like?"

Perhaps with a follow-up question:
"What assistance (if any) would be desirable in cameras?"

I usually stick to the 3/2 without questioning it, but when I crop I prefer the square format.

I'm not fond of 16/9 or 16/10 (my phone does that) or wide panoramas. They are nice for saving more information about a place though.

Regarding tools, my camera being 6MP I avoid cropping anyway, and never more than 3/2 to 1/1.

I used to shoot a Panasonic LX5, which had a multi aspect sensor. I shot mostly with 4:3 and 3:2. If I were picking one to add to a camera it would be 7:5 as I find images from 5x7 cameras pleasing.

35.9:24 seems to be a reasonable ratio... but I trim a little to get 3:2 in post processing

For landscapes and even some environmental portraits, I like 16:9

I like, in this order, 1:1, 4:3, 16:9 (both vertical and horizontal), other.  But (with one exception) I never change aspect ratios in camera.  I always shoot with the whole sensor to gather as much data as possible and crop later in post.

You certainly don't need fancy expensive software like Lightroom or Photoshop to crop a photograph!  Any basic image viewer, photo browser, editing suite for a phone OS, etc, has a cropping board.  I crop my images (and do other basic edits like sharpening, and tweaks to gamma, contrast, highlights and shadows, etc.) in FastStone, which is freeware, and in Pixlr on my phone.

The one exception is my small camera, the Little Monster, which is a Fuji X-M1 with the 27 mm pancake lens on board.  I sometimes set this camera to 1:1 just for fun, particularly when shooting with a fixed aperture toy lens.

Interesting question ... I used exclusively 3:2 for over 10 years, but then got a Pentax 645Z with a 4:3 aspect ratio. Since then, I have a huge preference for 4:3 in portrait orientation and find 3:2 looks unnatural. For landscape orientation, both aspect ratios work fine, and what works best depends on the subject and composition.

In like 6x7 primarily after my Mamiya RB67 but 4x3 approximates to that in digital, so my Panasonic LX100 is mainly left on that ratio or occasionally 1x1. My DSLR is obviously 3x2 and I find that too wide for my taste but as I'm composing in that ratio, I leave it like that and don't alter it later. What I would like but will never get, is a full frame 4x3 camera with the sensor the same width as FF but with a length conforming to 4x3 ratio. I know I could crop an FF EVF camera but I'd still be fretting about the lost pixels.

When shooting I use the whole sensor 3:2 in landscape or portrait orientation, as appropriate for the subject.  In PP I crop to whatever looks right for the final image, which is often at or close to 16:9, 3:2, or 7:5, in either orientation.  The A series (close to 7:5) papers and printers are common, as are inexpensive frames with A4 pre-cut mat boards, so for me 7:5 is a convenient ratio for a home-made A4 framed print.

I never really though about the question aside from a general sense of preferring 3:2 over 4:3 and not being a big fan of 16:9.

Having said that... I like this answer... it makes sense to me. I will have to play with it.

The aspect ratio is selected during the postprocessing for most of my photos.

After a long time looking at my photos on a monitor, exclusively, I ordered a couple of prints from my last holiday. I ordered them 13 cm - but I did not realized, that the 13 cm is the smaller side and the longer side depends on the aspect ratio I selected before. My photos with ratio 1:1 were 13 cm each side and looked just small all. I had a few photo with 16:9 ratio - and they came 23.1:13 - very nice panoramas.

My this is exactly what you can expect and there is nothing special about it. But to me it was a nice surprise to get that large prints if I select a wide aspect ratio (for the same price as the tiny 1:1 prints).

Now, I will think about process towards 16:9 more often ...

Best regards

Holger

3:2 for landscapes, 3:4 for portraits

3:2 is too tall for vertical portraits, so I've been trimming 3:2 shots to 3:4 for portraits. I do think 3:2 is fine for wide landscapes though.

Can I just add that I've never liked Eddie Ephraums. He always seemed to me to represent the triumph of technique over content. Attractive but empty images.

I much prefer the work of John Blakemore and Thomas Joshua Cooper, for pure black and white landscape photography with first class printing.

Re: What aspect ratios do Pentax users like?

Since I shoot birds a lot and am often cropping severely, I have no consistent pattern.  But there is a certain tendency to do bird cropping as a square.  With landscapes on the other hand, a cinerama aspect ratio sometimes makes sense, though of course then people might just think it's a stitched pano.

Interesting, we share the same view. Have you always felt this way, or only after using the 645Z?

Interesting, I went from 4:3 for my first few digital cameras and then to 3:2, since 3:2 I've never looked back.
