R5/6 what have you assigned for the 4th dial? A poll
1

So I’m wondering what everyone is assigning for their 4th dial with the R5 and R6.

Let’s assume you have three of the dials assigned to the exposure triangle of Av, Tv and ISO. If that is not true then select “other” and list your settings in the comments below.

I’m also interested in which dials people are setting to what. For me, I am setting

Main dial: Aperture

Quick control dial 1: shutter

Quick control dial 2: ISO

Lens control ring: Select AF method

Please detail your control scheme in the comments.

Oh no! He should know by now that "equivalence" is a forbidden word for APS-C but perfectly allowed for 1” Sonys, compact cameras, smartphones and maybe even for M43s.

I have the  EF adapter with the control ring.  I don't use it because, with my longer EF lenses, my left hand is too far forward (to support the weight of the lens) so I can't reach the control ring.

Other. I use Fv mode 99% of the time and don't use the control ring on the lens at all as, when I did, I kept forgetting my EF 100-400 (my last EF lens apart from the 100 macro) doesn't have one. When I get the RF 100-500 I'll probably start using it, and then have to remember about it!

* - I'm thinking about putting ISO on the LCR because I've also set up the AF point selection to let me toggle AF-Mode between tracking and 1-point using M-Fn, and I use touch screen to move the 1-point around. I like being able to switch between Auto-ISO and a specific ISO, but I haven't figured out setting up the R6 for that yet. I currently have C1 and C2 set up to use Auto-ISO with 'day' and 'night' upper limits respectively, coupled with EC on QCD 2 this lets me work the way I used to with Fuji bodies and their dedicated EC dials.

I've been away from Canon since 2009 but from 1995 - 2006 an EOS-5 (Elan IIe) was my primary body and then a Rebel XTi. Anyway, a lot's changed since those days and I've only had the R6 in hand for a day and half, so it's all subject to change

I don't have an RF mount body but seeing all these options sure does make me want one.

Good old aperture on the lens dial, so I can quickly change it if I need more depth without having to do anything with the right hand.

Re: R5/6 what have you assigned for the 4th dial? A poll

I have assigned the Control Ring to EC at times and Direct AF Selection at other times.  But I actually don't use it ever.

1) Main Dial = Shutter Speed....for birds/wildlife I'm always changing this, rarely aperture (I just shoot wide open

2) Quick Control Dial 1 (lower rear wheel): Aperture...more awkward to get to and I rarely change from wide open so leave I leave Aperture there

3) Quick Control Dial 2 (upper rear wheel): ISO....second most common thing I change after SS.

I shoot in M all the time.  Therefore EC is not needed.  I had EC on my Control Ring to play around with Auto ISO.  But I find with WYSIWYG in the EVF that it is just faster for me to move my SS or ISO quickly vs messing around with Auto ISO and EC.

I then had Direct AF Selection on the Control Ring but I find the Control Ring on the 100-500 and the EF adapter to be next to extremely awkward to get to.  The Control Ring needs to be way further out on the lens for larger lenses (like what Canon did for the 600/800 DO lenses).

I currently have SET button to do Direct AF Selection but rarely need that as I have 4 different AF modes already on different Custom Buttons (Auto Face/Tracking on shutter, Zone on AF-ON, Spot on * and Horizontal Zone on the AF Selection button).  But occasionally I want to try one of the other ones or bring one of my back button ones up to the shutter to make it quicker to activate so that is when I use the SET button.

And I use Auto ISO mostly.

Same as you with the dials on the body. I'm trying out AF area on the control ring, but the more I fiddle with customizing buttons and rings, the less easily I can remember where I put them. Almost to the point of wishing that the Ring Func menu could hold more than just 5 items, so I could throw everything into that menu for now.

I have the Viltrox EF to RF, which I'm sure doesn't work as well as the original, so I don't use the control dial because of how it feels. I tried setting it to change AF mode but didn't like that either, but I think I left it as that even though I don't actually use it.
