Best Option for G7 lens wider angle than 14mm but not fishy?

How do they do that in TV in cars where the presenter is not sat so close to the lens as in the example below.

This is a G7 14-44 stocklens but for smaller spaces it really is not wide enough. Is there a stabilised fixed option lens that would work? Or would you just use a GO PRO in that instance and have the horrible picture it delivers?

How would you do it?

You can skip in on this to see the example.

There are lots of wider zooms, but none of them have OIS.  Maybe you need a body with IBIS?

12~35 mk-I and mk-II,12~32 and the 2 12~60 are the widest OIS zoom lenses of Panny. No other lenses covering such range are OIS specially for prime lenses (simply because Panny thinks they don't need IS for that range).

Both of these 5 lenses are DIAL IS compatible and if you'll upgrade G7 later you could enjoy the 1~1.5 stops more effective stabilization than OIS.

Olympus also has the 12~100 pro lens which is OIS.

A 12 can handle those tighter indoor shooting better than 14. It is my reason that 12 is my basic need for my general walking around standard zoom lens.

The Panny 12- zooms (like the 12-32) have OIS.

A 12mm lens may just barely be wide enough for what you want. The little 12-32 has OIS.

But you probably want/need wider. Then there is nothing with IS or OIS. Here some options, assuming you do not want to spend too much.

- Very cheap: the SLRmagic 8mm f/4 is a rectiliniear manual prime lens, very well suited for car interiors and for video. This an extremely small/light lens, originally made for drones. New US$149 at B&H.

- Mid range: Olympus 9-18mm f/4-5.6, a small, collapsible, rectilinear zoom. Very abundant and can easily be found used from under $200, and new from B&H US$549.

- Mid range: the Venus Optics Laowa 7.5mm f/2 is a rectilinear manual prime lens. Price US$ 499 at B&H. Too new to find used bargains.

- Mid to high range: Panasonic 7-14mm f/4 rectilinear zoom. Excellently suited for car interiors. It is an older lens first launched in 2009. This is why it can be found used from around US$250 upwards, and new US$797 at B&H.

The 7-14 is arguably the best value for $ of the bunch, provided you buy it used.

I have had pretty good results with the slr magic 8mm, I've found that it works best with f8 and focus at infinity.

You might check out the Panasonic DMW-GWC1 Wide Conversion Lens which attaches to the front of your 14-42mm. Changes the 14mm to 11mm.

Thats a smart Idea - the new G something has IBIS which will be the same as what I have now... Good shout.

I should have said that I think you need wider than 12mm.  You could always buy a used 12-32 as an interim solution.

Yes I should try and see what there is - around the 8 mark -

This wont be go proish will it?

Go pro allows you to do "linear" which is nice

Wide when it suits which is ok but has its own downsides...

The only other option is to invest in a few batteries - find a go pro mic that actually works or record into an Iphone using a lav mic and remote control the stop and start of the go pro and use the zoom function.

Not ideal as the quality of the link - granted dreadful conditions - does look much nicer than that one might get from a go pro -

I think they use GH5 on Grand Tour - so no idea how they get round the IBS

Go Pros are used on TV for things like Police stuff or ambulance - quality is shocking.

They're practically impossible to find, and usually quite expensive when you do. There's a thread somewhere about the various wide converters available, I've tried couple and in the end settled on using the 7-14/4, even if it's not stabilized.

Re: Panasonic DMW-GWC1 Wide Conversion Lens

There was also a dude on YT with a non pan wide lens adapter again - mysteriously hard to find.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbhxxdlF5dQ

Also weirdly the actual name of it has been removed from the description.

I searched and searched  before with no results.

7-14mm is very expensive - £700+ omg - Its not fish eye tho is it?

Looks like I may have to try out the Go Pro 8/9 and light the subject as well as possible because for £700 + I am better off making do with not too many presenter close ups and using cut aways - you can get two Go Pro 9s for £700 for this application.

There is one or two on eBay for 400 odd but yes again no stability -

Ffordes have a used 7-14/4 for £489.

Re: Panasonic DMW-GWC1 Wide Conversion Lens

hmm ... I might have to hire one first and see how brilliant it is - if it makes the subject look good and F4 is light enough then great.

I don't want to have a wide but darker image

If is a light weight, very sharp, well controlled optically, and close to the widest linear rectangular lens of the market.

I had compiled the following to show the angle of view of various focal length FYI:

7mm (the largest frame)  vs 9mm (Pink) vs 12mm (purple) vs 14mm (Yellow)

If you can afford it, it worth every penny...

You are quite close to the subject in a car.  I’d say f/4 would be a useful aperture, even at 7mm.  I have a FF 15/4.5, so I could have a play in my car sometime.

Nobody mentioned the Panasonic 8-18mm, that's f/2.8 at 8mm and f/4 at its longest

Not too heavy or large and allows a normal screw on filter to be used

The 7-14 is very good, and quite rectilinear, and Panny bodies (at least) do software correction for what distortion it does have.

I found the thread about wide angle converters, and my experiments with a 14/2.5 and Tiffin converter. https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/63464192 If I didn't have the 7-14 already, I might be using that combination as a 10.5.
