M50 and M5 Movie Recording Length

Hi all, just a quick one:

I have both the M5 and M50 and can't find the how long each long (in minutes) each camera will record a movie for on a full battery charge.

Does anyone have experience in this, or know the answer?

I'm going to record an event on a tripod and would like an hour, is this possible, or would I need an external power source?

Hi.

All Canon cameras have 30 minutes time limit for video (even the new R5 and R6). So, you'll have to stop recording at some time close to the 30 minutes limit, and start recording again.

You may switch battery after the first 30 minutes video, and start charging the battery that is out of the camera, and after the second 30 minutes video, put the charged battery back again. And so on.

There is no fixed answer for how long a single battery can last while filming.

If you don't use the LCD, the battery lasts longer. If you turn off Continuous AF the battery lasts even longer.

If you record 1080p at 24fps the battery lasts longer than 1080p at 60fps.

Maybe you can put the camera in a tripod and turn off Digital IS and Lens IS. Maybe you need to move while filming, and Digital IS and Lens IS is crucial.

As timbazi suggested, if the event isn't within a few hours from now, you may test and see how the battery performs.

In the worst case scenario, you can always use a dummy battery. Check this video.

I hope it helps.
