RP or M6 mk II

I have EOS M6, M3 and M50 so getting either:

  • M6 mk II
  • RP

is a logical choice for me, R5 and R6 are too expensive/rare at the moment for me, I am also not convinced that I could live with only 20 MP.

So it is basically down to 26 MP with integrated VF FF or 32 MP crop with no VF.

I would really like a real world comparison of these 2.

Hi KEG,

I know you’ve been researching the various choices. Lots to consider!

I assume you’re pretty knowledgable regarding the pros and cons of FF vs crop, size vs IQ, DOF vs bokeh, etc. And the self-imposed limitations placed on the M System by Canon (limiting its potential, esp re: a fast standard zoom). Like many others, you’ve probably already considered the work-arounds re. EF lenses, viewfinder, cost, etc.

I can only give you my experience from one side, but it might be a start. I HAVE THE M6 MARK II AND LOVE IT.

Now that that’s clear, we can continue.

Seriously, the M6ii is completely re-engineered and is a substantial upgrade to all that came before it. It’s fast, it’s capable, it has tons of bells and whistles. It will change the way you shoot. I use it for everything, and if it was able to do those pesky BIFs I wouldn’t need any other camera.

There’s another earlier thread here with a big M6ii discussion, and my detailed thoughts can be found there. Follow the other links there for more of my samples and real-world shooting...

https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/64108171

Best of luck to you in your quest. Holler back with any questions!

I also have the M6ii.  It is very enjoyable and more than capable camera.  I got it as a kit and the evf is actually very good and is located in a very easy and comfortable position.

The RP is about the RF glass.

The M doesn't have the RF 24-105 F4 L IS with nano focus and control ring that I can set to EC.  Get this lens if you get the RP

I'm also getting the new RF 85 F2 IS

xmas time deals should be really good.  Last xmas I paid $899 for my RF 24-105 F4L and $850 for my RP.

if you want to grow into FF in the long run, the RP + RF 24-105 F4 L is a great place to start

bodies will come and go in the long run but these RF lenses are forever glass.  Glass first!

Going to the store to buy food and needed supplies is showing me the dollar is losing value so I am not expecting prices to go down very much this year if at all.

What are you looking to gain from the upgrade?  I have both cameras and like both of them.

How does the M6 mk ii perform noise-wise at higher ISOs? I'm an M5 user, and I'm generally very happy with it. But I find it to be pretty noisy at higher ISOs. I guess a FF sensor would be much better. But maybe the new M6 is a big step up too?

For - the M6 II is not brilliant at high ISO - DPP looks cleaner than lightroom but at cost of fine detail.  I'm not saying bad because it is not - but the 5D IV on a pixel level is miles ahead - provided both can frame the same.

M6 II though is a very good low ISO camera and fine for smaller outputs at medium settings

Start with the glass and work your way back.

II recently purchased an RP, matched with the RF 24-105 F4 L, for use as my main stills camera. Nothing in the M system can match the quality of this RF standard zoom lens.

My M6 MkII, matched with the EF-M 11-22, will now become a backup used primarily for 4k video. Nothing in the R system can match the price of this M wide angle zoom lens.

Camera bodies come and go, glass can last forever.

In my opinion it does quite well up to around 1600.  I never use it beyond 1600.

In that case I probably would go for the RP.  It gets closer.

Nothing can match it right now.  That will likely be changing soon.  There is a RF 18-45mm wide angle zoom coming soon and it will likely be sized and priced similar to the 11-22mm.

AF vs lenses
3

In terms of AF capability, and most other features, the RP is basically a full frame M50.

Upgrading to the M6 II gets you better AF and better video.

Upgrading to the RP gets you access to lenses that have no equivalent in the M system.  Even the slow sounding RF 24-105mm f/4-7.1 kit lens would be equivalent to a hypothetical EF-M 15-65mm f/2.5-4.5.
