... OK. Anyone still shooting the D100?
5

... Completed my trio of CCD sensor Nikons with the D100. Shot 100s of photos in the past few weeks, and it will take time to learn to do it justice. My very early impressions are that I prefer it over the D200 and the D40. Love the D200, but believe I am preferring the 6MPs over the 10MPs. The lower resolution is a more artistic image, leaving more to the imagination.

... I will do a more fair and experienced comparison after more time with all three. However, I know I would never go back to a CMOS sensor with it’s primitive, artificial colours and flat, non dynamic images.

I used to have one it was my second dslr  after a D40   I thought it was a fab camera at the time but to me let down by not having enough pixals, it was consired to be the digital  version of the F100 film camera.

Has to be said they are rather gorgeous images. Which lens did you have on?

My take on the D100 is that the sensor is quite biased towards brown and blue colours which give it a unique rendering.

As I've mentioned before the only other camera that shares the sensor - as far as I know - is the cult classic Epson RD-1 which is at least ten times the price of a used D100...  I think the Epson processor may have a little more spice than the Nikon's, but I still think there is some similarity between the two cameras.

We are talking about a period in photography when camera manufacturers were trying to remain faithful to the appearance of film, which meant, dare I say, being a little more cavalier with the colour filter array.  I feel today digital photography tries too hard for harsh realism at the expense of character.

Anyway, with CCD era cameras at bargain bin prices now, it's just too much fun isn't it?  I've just bought a D40 (for £40) just to see how it compares to the D100 and D70.

Back to the D100...

... Neil: Really like your images...  beautiful, natural colour transitions.

... After a few weeks with the D100, I was out yesterday morning with the D200. Wonderful images, very different from the D100, but more “realistic” than the D100. Not the character or magic of the D100.

... It will take time and hundreds of photos to fairly compare the three CCDs cameras. White balance is a good challenge with the D100. Auto balance does give a poor cast in most situations. Trying mostly Shade now.

Yes Iain I'd agree with that, indeed all the different CCD cameras have their own character, just like when we used film, and like film you can't  easily change the medium to suit the subject/scene.

I hardly ever use jpegs so the WB thing isn't that important to me but you're right about the D100 and I would also use shade as a default - it's pretty much shade all the time where I live anyway.. that or "overcast"!

The D200 I find maddening - it could be the perfect camera, it's the only CCD DSLR that meters with non AF lenses (I think I'm right in saying) so it's very versatile, but it's too heavy for a DX camera, the battery life is awful, and you can't see all of the screen if you wear specs.  I find myself using the D60 more these days which is very similar in output to the D200.

I keep thinking I should do a CCD comparison, as I have the D40, D50, D60, D70, D100 and D200, I could even throw in the Olympus E1 for good measure - watch this space!

... Ask Mait: Having had all the advanced PS programs, I am now a simple PS Express and Snapseed processor on my mini ipad. More and more I am doing less and less.

... Shooting base ISO, and almost no sharpening. I like the balance of in focus and out of focus areas with the Zenitar and CCD sensor. Sharpening overly separates the two.

... Also, learning to expose slightly darker than the popular “well exposed” image. It brings out the subtly of the CCD colours in a world of flashing lights and bright crayon-like colours everywhere.

Got it. Thanks. keep up the good work.

Hi, I am new here, and could not be happier that others are using the d100.  I have always loved the images it is capable of.  I am thinking of getting a d200 and a D300 because as someone said here, it is fun to use these .

I still use the D100, in particular for shooting images with filter on the lens that passes only infrared radiation. The D100 does not have to be modified to make these type of shots.

This image was made with a Nikon D100, a Hoya Infrared R72 Filter, and the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 lens. Exposure was 1/60 sec f/3.3,  ISO 640.

I'm guessing here, but one interesting thing about the D100 sensor is that the filter stack is very thin, from memory it's nearly as thin as the filter on the Leica M8 which is really sensitive to IR light.  I've never really thought about it but it could be the IR filter on the D100 is quite weak.

So I guess if the D100 is already sensitive to IR it helps when using an IR pass filter.  It's well known that the Leica often needs an IR cut filter of course, so I guess it would also be a candidate for this type of photography - albeit with a much heavier price tag!

Yet another reason why I'm slightly surprised there isn't more interest in unique cameras such as the D100. The Epson RD-1 has exactly the same sensor as the D100 yet you can have the Nikon for peanuts compared to the Epson.  A similar case is the Olympus E1 which has a Kodak sensor directly related to the Leica M8.  Less than 150 GBP will get you an E1 but what price an M8 these days?

Maybe it's just a fact of life that people don't start to appreciate the qualities of certain machines until there's hardly any left - look at the current popularity of steam locomotives.  It's already happening in the film camera world and I've noticed that there are certain compact digitals that are starting to become "sought after".

... Neil: Appreciate the ongoing education.

... Speaking of compact digitals. For a few months I have been considering getting a waterproof Nikon W150 or W100 for rainy or snowy photos, and just to carry around. A CMOS sensor, but might process a few images out of it. A few weeks ago, one came up on the local used market, and I put in a few low offers, both reasonably refused. Then a used S31 (2014) came on the market. Looked it up, and was amazed to find that it has a CCD sensor. Had to try it, and one is on the way.
