G7 only refocusing in 'tracking' AF mode?

New to Panasonic and micro four thirds cameras (having used Canon and Sony), using a bunch of G7s for an inspiring project we're working on, and would really appreciate any guidance with the problem we're having.

I know Panasonic cameras don't have great continuous auto focus, but it seems like auto focus is only working in 1 of the 5 'AF Modes' in the camera. Only works in 'Tracking' mode, but not in 'Face/Eye Detection', '49 Point', 'Custom Multi', or '1 Area'. In all those other modes, it seems to require major movement to decide to refocus. And to be clear, the Face/Eye Detection works, it follows my face and cross-hairs on my eyes, but it won't refocus.

Firmware is up-to-date. Confirmed on both G7s we currently have with kit lens and with an Olympus 17mm F1.8.

Have searched around but not found any answers. Made a short video to show the issue in detail. Forgive me if (and guide me to) someone has answered this somewhere on the forum.

Re: G7 only refocusing in 'tracking' AF mode?

You should make it clear that you are using HDMI and not actually recording in camera. That changes things, as you now need a mode that will always keeps autofocusing even when it is not recording. You already have Quick AF, which does refocus even when not recording (or half pressing shutter button), but it may not be as responsive as the normal modes.

Usually I would ask you to check first thing the "Continuous AF" setting under "Motion Picture" menu and turn it on. This is the setting that allows camera to refocus by itself when in video (regardless of AFF/AFS/AFC setting). See page 248 in advanced manual.

However, I'm not sure it has any effect when it's not recording. I would also try switching to the creative video mode on the mode dial. This is the only mode that allows you to change the actual PASM settings (in any other setting it ignores the shutter/aperture settings you set and just uses full auto). Not sure if it changes the responsiveness of AF when not recording.

You may be forced to turn on recording (although not sure if G7 can simultaneously record and HDMI) and throw away the footage.
