out with the oly 100-400
13

Here's a Flckr page with today's shooting. For most images I posted 1 uncropped (image, sharpness was default LR, minor exp. adjustments where necessary. ) followed by a crop, with adjustments.
Most are shot wide opened.  IS on. Camera (G9) on monopod.  RAW.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/190160504@N02/albums/72157715957931321
I never used flickr before and hope this works.  I have been a smugmug user for years but wanted an account with my screen name.
Overall, I'm pleased with the lens.  Gut, unscientific take compared to PL

1. Seems a bit sharper wide-opened
2.  I simply cannot discern a disadvantage in autofocus speed.

3. IS seems roughly same effect on image sharpness but I notice a bit more shake in the EVF. Can this be due to lack of IBIS?
4.  Still have not done any BIFS

5. Ergonomics.  Wow.  It's so  nice to be able to a)grip the zoom collar, which is out in front of the lens compared to the PL where you have to stick your hand between the barrel and the tripod mount.  b)turn the zoom w/almost no effort.  c)rotate lens freely
The additional weight I feel as I walk around for a long time.
Looks like a keeper to me.

Usually "out with" means you're getting rid of it.  Your writeup sounds exactly opposite.

For the best stability, turn the lens IS off and use the IBIS only. Specially true for Olympus owners, em1.2, em1.3, em1.x,...

tx. however cannot be done on a Lumix. You get lens or nothing.

I'll have a look at your flikr a bit later but wondered if you had trying to use the lens "push / pull"

I had a quick go yesterday and it seems remarkably smooth (thanks to whoever mentioned that Olympus have apparently aid it was designed to work that way)

that's been my findings, someone has tested this an found it takes about 4 seconds for the OIS to stabilise after which it does show a benefit, can't vouch for that though

I agree with everything yiu say, except this.

With the PL 100-400 I remove the tripod mount - the tripod mount is permanently attached to an ARCA plate, and only attached to the lens for tripod work - which is almost never.

b)turn the zoom w/almost no effort. c)rotate lens freely
The additional weight I feel as I walk around for a long time.
Looks like a keeper to me.

thanks,.  I felt no need to try the "push pull" on the OLY,  turning barrel was easy enough.  There doesn't seem to be a lot to grab onto up front though.

Re: out with the oly 100-400

yes, on the PL when I first got it, I removed the tripod shoe and direct mounted it on my monopod. then the plate that attaches socket to lens came loose, I had to peel off the covering and glue in the screws.  quite messy and it still wobbled a bit.
In another post I wrote that I think PL tried to engineer this whole thing to save bulk and weight, it led to problems.  The oly has a very old fashioned, generic collar, much simpler. nothing to break...as none of it is permanently attached to lens body. but yes, it is heavier and bigger

one constant niggle I have with Olympus, I do wish they had the split tripod ring so I don't have to take the lens of the body every time I want to remove it

From what you said I assume that you found the build quality of this  m43 100-400  decent ?

Yes, build quality 100% good. Similar to my only other oly, the 12-100 Pro.   I could not ask for more in this respect.  I don't experience any of loose mount issues reported by others.

Presentation suggestion

You know by now that your Flickr posting worked fine. However, you could have been a little more friendly toward readers like me, short of time, by posting a few of your best shots in full resolution. I just bailed looking for the best, and don't have time to trouble with download. As far as I know, Flickr won't allow you to look at photos enlarged beyond screen size to get a really good look.

However, things look pretty nice, as I think we know by now. Maybe a bit better than the PL 100-400 under certain circumstances, but I'm sticking with my PL as it's lighter, more compact...and already purchased!! No zoom or any other mechanical troubles. Just lucky, I guess.

Hmmm. To me out with gear has always meant being out to shoot. Now, if he said, ‘down’ with the Oly 100-400, then that imply something negative

Thanks for that - I will look again at an em1.2 and this long zoom instead of my current dslr.

Sorry to inconvenience you but I tried. The Gallery section on dp review won't let me add anymore.

I don't have my own url.

Maybe you can give me idea how to do this? I asked before on an other post and got crickets.

Just saying, when I clicked on your thread I expected to see reasons why you were unhappy with the lens based on the title.  Quite a shock to find you were a happy camper.
