This week in Cali

Smoke, smoke, and more smoke

Sailing into sunset... part of the less is more collection

Channeling Ansel Adams... foreground, mid-ground, background, sky

Terrible pic... just check out the ISO. This was taken at noon. Never saw any sunshine that day or the day after.

Re: Smoke in Paradise

Thanks, Joe.  I woke late on Wednesday and my bedroom was orange and dark.  It was almost 8 AM.  The curtains glowed a bit brighter orange and I looked out and it was nearly dark and the sky was muddy orange.   It's worse today but no longer orange.

Isn't it amazing what just a degree or two of temperature change can do?  Rich

Re: Bird Dog

Very nice set Craig. Jake looks as handsome and cute as ever but I get the feeling he's not too keen on posing for pics. Maybe I'm completely wrong of course.

Re: Mask Up

An interesting set WN. The wearing of masks seems to be a controversial issue around the world. I think they do little if any harm to the wearer if used correctly so will continue to wear one as and when required.

Cases of the virus are on the rise over here, particularly among the younger generation. Local lockdowns are in place in certain areas of the country. I can't see things returning to normal anytime soon.

Take care and stay safe

Re: This week in Cali

I can commiserate, Joe. The smoke sometimes diffuses and dampens the light but sometimes it diffuses and makes it glare.

The wind is supposed to change from SE to S tomorrow and that won't help at all. I just read and saw that the smoke is over The Pacific and out a long way. So, if an onshore breeze develops it will blow smoke on us for a few days until or it clears the accumulation, if it can.

From a long time ago and one of my favorites. Rich

Re: Oldies

I really liked this set of images Harvey. Not sure a ' better' camera would have provided better memories.

Re: Smoke in Paradise

From the point of view of photography, that's a great set of images Rich but it's a situation that's completely alien to me and beyond my comprehension. We occasionally get grass and moorland fires but nothing anywhere near as devastating. Our climate does have certain advantages but that doesn't stop me complaining. I sincerely wish I could send some of our rain your way.

Take care of yourself

Re: Experiments in Selective Colour

I especially like your first image Andrew. To me it illustrates the life of today's youngsters. Also like the old petrol pump. I definitely fall into the category of '. Old Farts' as I can remember using that type of pump and filling up my motorcycle for the equivalent of 50p.😀

Re: This week in Cali

It can't be healthy being out and about in all that smoke Joe. As I said to Rich, I can't get my head around what's going on in your part of the country.

Stay safe

Smoke on the water

The smoke from the California wildfires is making it hard to breathe here in the Seattle area, but also creating beautiful lighting conditions for photography.

Kayakers on Lake Washington - Olympus E-M1 Mark II, M.Zuiko PRO 12-40/2.8 @ 40mm, ISO 200, 1/320 at f/5.6

Meydenbauer Bay Smokey Sunset - Olympus E-M1 Mark II, M.Zuiko PRO 12-40/2.8 @ 18mm, ISO 200, 1/1000 at f/5.6

Note that in normal times there'd be much more light AND Seattle would be clearly visible a few miles across the lake.

That's because they are viking pigs. They know that after they've been eaten as bacon comes resurrectionand they can start all over making even more bacon. Very handy, that.

Re: Smoke in Paradise

Thanks, Dave.  This year the conditions are alien and incomprehensible to me, too.  We have pestilence and disaster.  What are the other two?  Famine and war?

Keep yourself safe and well.  Rich

From a better day.

Re: 4 pics that have almost nothing in common

I think the 3 first has a lot in common. They are all about geometry.

I like the first one the best. It isn't only because of the symmetry. It's unusual in that it show only the middle part of the trees. Turned out very pleasing to my eyes.

It's my bird dog lens.  I sit on the patio shooting the dog while waiting for birds.

The long lens works well with a short dog.  I can sit in a chair and shoot instead of getting on the ground.

Nice. The first one is lovely.

Lots of detail there. What do you say? Does the somewhat larger sensor make a difference?

Yes, for the dogs pictures I think it does.
