* The Weekly Image Thread 20 09 11 #472 *

Welcome to The Weekly Image Thread

This thread will appear every Saturday (GMT) and is open for submissions and discussions about images and processing techniques until the next Saturday, or the new thread is started. If the thread is nearing full before the next Saturday, I may start a new thread and carry on until it fills or the next Saturday arrives and it is reasonably full in which case I will start another. Confused, so am I! From time to time the start could be delayed if I am unavailable.

Although this Weekly thread is in the Olympus SLR forum, we openly welcome users of all brands and models.

Please:

  1. Reply to this post and change the TITLE!
  2. Please reply to at least one other contribution, your replies encourage posters!!!
  3. If asked, please share your processing techniques or technical details.
  4. Please show the EXIF if possible. Please identify the lens used regardless of which camera was used to take the image. This helps people form opinions of the lens used with the body to possibly influence future acquisitions.
  5. If special lighting was used to create your image stating what was done may help others.

Thanks for joining and contributing this week.

Experiments in Selective Colour

I spent some time playing with a plug in with PSP, GRX Studio. The module worked better on some images than others. A quick and dirty way to get selective colour for some images but overall I think I would choose other methods. I do have to add though that it was pretty easy to try to see if the results are ok.

All images from the archives, reworked from scratch.

Andrew

I liked the way this one turned out, as far as the processing

the selective colour part worked ok but for this and the one below I did some further processing using Nik Color Efex Color Contrast and it may be too much!

here it is too much

perhaps I should have propped up the pump before shooting but I did not want to get shot!

here this method was not very successful!

and for the one above, even less so!

Mask Up

I tend to be an observer of life with a camera... I find the human condition interesting but you may find it too controversial … I can't always judge my audience, if I have one … But these pictures are from my walk and observations last Saturday at the beginning of a USA holiday weekend..... Being downtown and there being many others here I was curious as to how seriously we took this pandemic and the mandates about social distancing and masks …. This rider who is in the street alone may be over thinking masks …

This next picture I liked for its irony and it actually gave me the idea for this set.

I confess that my subject here, like me, has the mask pulled down because she is outside and has no one withing 20 feet of her. This is my philosophy about covering my face but I always do mask up when I think I might pass withing 8 feet of another human....

Of course if you happen to be eating breakfast no mask is expected …

or maybe carrying on a conversation with proper social distancing …. and partially masked ….

or advocating an issue or protesting …

or singing …

But if you are with a large group one might consider that the mask is not only for the health of yourself and others but is a sign of respect for your fellow human beings …

I must say that on my walk through town I saw less than 75% of those I encountered had masks or showed me that respect … but it is interesting … and I have a few more pictures from this walk that I might share but if this is too controversial (political) I did get out to the Botanical Gardens after the weekend and can share some flowers instead! …. I find this debate we are currently engaged in about the the value of retaining the thoughts of the Enlightenment interesting. ….

These pictures were taken using the E-M5.3 with the ZD50mm macro lens. …. The M5.3 doesn't have a tilting LCD but has allowed me to use the ZD 25mm and 50mm lenses that the M10.2 doesn't. …however, next time I'll probably use the P42.5 which is smaller and has a better frame than the 50 .. I really had to back away to take a couple of these pictures ….

Stay well and mask up when needed …

Re: Mask Up

A set that delivers on the title WN. I like the singers. Here we have a fairly large population of Mennonites of various sects. Some of the ones here do not seem to want to mask up, they even have to be threatened with expulsion when entering stores before they will conform. I am not sure why that is the case. Perhaps they believe they are immune because of their beliefs or that if they get ill it will be because they were chosen. I do not know. We have a Mennonite church a few hundred feet from our house. That particular group, Conservative, seems extremely respectful, welcoming and follows the rules. They are a welcome addition to our community.  As the red neck capital of southern Ontario this area has lots of people that do not follow the rules and likely do not have any religious affiliation.  I am not going to pretend to understand what goes through the heads of some people because I just don't.

Stay well WN!

WN those are very interesting pics, what I learn from it is we all are letting the guard down, and that's not good.......even if we are walking more than 25 feet away........i believe that the reason on that is that the news are less informative about the sick people around......but well. nice that you got be able to walk around....and that's the important thing

Nice color, Andrew.  You can't go wrong with pictures of children.  I especially like the little girl in #3.  That one is Rockwellesque.  Her costume is great with the hat and the stylish shoes.  Rich

Politically correct or not, the people without a mask will improve the gene pool if they catch Covid-19. I have no sympathy for them for spreading the disease around.

Where I live everybody enters stores in a mask and many stores hand them out if you forget one. Even outdoors in the parks, probably 85% of the people wear a mask including children.

Re: Mask Up

Not too controversial for me, WhyNot, but I am a Muckraker and I like to see it as well as dish it.  I consider what you have said here as very mild.

Yeah, '..respect for your fellow human beings' (aka stupidity) is something in short supply.  From the cretin who parks in the center of a parallel parking space big enough for two to those without masks, they seem to out breed those who can think and be mindful.

I like this set of pictures and the commentary.  It is thought provoking.  Rich

Thank you, Andrew ..I appreciate your reply as most of my posts are centered about my narrative as I take few pictures that stand alone .... as to the politics, I generally leave that to CNN, MSNBC, FOX, .... etc. ....  Not really interested in generating heat just considered philosophy ... which I'm always interested in ... I usually watch and listen, not interested in the argument ....

Stay well ... and get out and about but socially distanced ....

Thank you . .... but did you like the photography?????

Stay well ...

Rich

Thanks for the comment,. ... Wasn't trying to generate any heat just considered thought .. I leave the noise and politics mostly to Facebook and Twitter ... and I have no accounts there ....

Thanks gain and stay well ... always enjoy your presence here ...

Re: Oldies

Great to get away and enjoy these scenes ... I think I've seen the Grand Canyon one time while our flight banked over the canyon on the way back from Las Vegas ... California, well except for the fact that I was born there, I've spent little time in the state and always on business when I was there .... So I'll sit back and enjoy the trip you've provided. ..

Stay well ...

Smoke in Paradise

Our reliable onshore wind failed last week and it began to come from the east. It brought heat and smoke.

Until a couple of days ago it stayed up high but now it is on the ground.

This from an evening walk yesterday along Eureka Slough just 1/4 mile from home.

No fog here, all smoke.

It's the same today.

This from day before yesterday, same area as the first. The smoke was still staying high but it was still very dark, almost like dusk.

10:28 A.M., normally, the light would be from the right. I had to use ISO 800, 1/80 with the lens wide open to get enough light, then brighten more in PP.

Here's something you rarely see in my pictures. Water like glass. Wind from the east must top the 3000 foot elevation mountains just behind Humboldt Bay and doesn't get back down to the ground like the onshore flow is. That allows the smoke to settle and stay low.

Looking toward The Pacific. Wide pano of the still high smoke day before yesterday along The Waterfront Trail. Here, last night, same as the first picture.

RCAF Expeditionary Force, medium bombers using the smoke for stealth. It worked, they got my Kia. Their payload mixed with the ash on the car and you can't wipe that grit off without sanding the paint, it must be hosed.

I just realized I'm going backward. I don't care. This is the beginning of the walk above, descending from 40 feet elevation down to sea level.

Next 3 from Thursday last week along The Waterfront Trail near home. The Pacific breeze had just failed and the smoke had come to stay.

Next day I went to Humboldt Hill for the smoky sunset over Humboldt Bay.

I used to feel ghoulish from making pictures of color from tragedy. There have been so many fires in the last few years that I'm getting numb to emotion from it.

This friendly young couple were there to take the sunset, too. We talked while I shot and I told them it was OK to neck and I wouldn't make a picture of that....yes I would have...but they both giggled and did not, Drat !

That's all.

Stay safe, lucky, and well. Rich

Re: Smoke in Paradise

I like the photojournalism here Rich; but, am really sorry to see the west again in flames .. I saw  rodriguezPhoto's pictures in the last Thread and now yours ..... and I also just saw on TV again the lines of cars trying to escape the flames in Washington or Oregon ...could be either .. not sure how we adapt to our new realities …. as all these current problems appear to all be symptoms of our real problem that no one will say out loud …. and I'll refrain ….

Stay well and adapt …

A powerful set of photos, Rich.

The fires, among many tragic things,  make for intriguing photography.
