I currently have three E-M1 bodies (original). I do almost all portrait and model work. But as the new bodies are coming out some older bodies are lowering in price (EM5 II). Is it time to move along? I have ten lenses, a E-PL1 and E-PL9, so I am vested in the Olympus line and not looking to move away from Olympus yet. Oh, and I do not have the financial resources to go to the newer E-M1's. There is nothing wrong with my gear, other than getting old. Thoughts are greatly appreciated!

If you live in Europe get a E-M1 Mark II for about €1300 euro new from a official dealer. Claim your free f/1.2 prime and sell it for €700 or more. That way ithe new body will cost you only €600.

Of course with a glut of new f/1.2s coming into the market the price might go down in the next few weeks

Are there any signs of new f/1.2 primes?

What could they improve? Possible Sync IS?

I mean the ones people have got free being sold to cover the cost of the EM1 mk ii (See two para above)

I see.

I think most will give it a try and keep it. I know I will. Haven't decided on which one to get..

I recently purchased the OMD EM1 M3 after my original EM1 had a shutter failure. I like most of the improvements (I prefer the slightly smaller body of the original and the dedicated button for HDR mode).

While I haven't had a chance to do a lot of testing with it, the improvements in image quality, noise levels, and the articulating screen are big selling points for me. I also have already started using the Live ND feature, which I think I'm going to get a lot of use out of. I'm curious about the high res mode also, but not sure if that will get as much use.

I decided to get Mark 1 fixed to have a back up body in the field - it was cheaper than buying one used, but I doubt I will use it much now.

The only truly rational reason for upgrading a working camera body is to acquire features that allow an easier work flow or get pictures you otherwise have difficulty shooting i.e enhanced AF or AF with tracking for moving subjects. Or lowlight photography.

Semi rational reasons would be to try out new features because they seem interesting or useful in some circumstances but not essential. Weather sealing might be important for working outside, but hardly important for studio work, but it might be nice to have just in case.

Assuming you're shooting in good light, have appropriate lenses, and  skills, pretty much any digital camera body made in the last decade can produce excellent images.

Then again........maybe you might just have GAS.......

Then it's not time to upgrade.

You could set up a dedicated custom button for the HRD mode.

In fact, that is what I did, but I liked where it had been before.  I don't need the flash modes, and I would have liked for that button to be customizable.

Shoot it till the shutter falls out...

The longer you shoot the better will be the kit you can afford to replace it with.

If you aren't getting any actual limitations with your amera now - just a vague feeling of "this is a bit old" then keep shooting with it.

You won't see a huge step change between what you have and what you would get.

Next year the kit you see now as "new but a bit expensive" will be "old and discounted" - so you can get a later newer model that may actually add to your image making process.

I think, from what you are shooting and the content of your post, my advice would be to stick with the bodies you have. You have three so plenty of backup in case one fails.

I would put the money into better glass. For your work, I am pretty sure you would appreciate the benefit of one of the 1.2 primes. We are starting to see these at much more affordable levels, especially if you consider the grey or used market. Any of those lenses would be a great partner to your bodies.

Sounds to me like there is no reason for you to change.

Re: Is it time to upgrade from the E-M1 original

I understand what you are saying... but the F1.2 are also bigger, heavier.  I have trully tested my existing lenses and have no issue with them.  Although the Sigma 56mm is tempting... thanks.
