Best Camera I’ve Ever Owned!
20

I’ve pretty much owned every Fuji in the X-T line and this is the most impressed I’ve been with a Fuji body since I was first introduced to the X-T1.

There’s genuinely so much about this body that is an upgrade over the X-T3, that I cannot fathom why some people don’t feel this is a worth while upgrade.

Seriously, with the IBIS I get sharp shots down to 1/5 shutter speeds with some of my lenses.  The shutter is softer, faster, and more quiet.  The Autofocus is faster and they put clarity in the camera, as well as the new film simulation...

Of course the articulating screen has it’s pros and cons, but it makes it easier to use the video features without an external monitor and the dual mode IBIS can save you money on a Gimbal, that’s easily $700 difference if you don’t need the external 4:2:2 10-bit 60 FPS 4K recording.

As good as the X-T3 was, this is a significant upgrade, and I’m glad Fuji finally gave me the camera I wanted.

Not an easy answer, as there are multiple aspects to be considered

When it comes to convenience and look&feel, these are the Fuji XT3 and XT4. When it comes to details and sharpness, I still prefer my Nikon D850.

I also like the specific color profiles of Fuji, particularly the Fuji ASTIA film simulation for portraits. For landscape photography I use custom profiles anyway, which deliver very similar results on Nikon and Fuji.

Best regards
Michael

Never owned a D850, but given the resolution difference I would expect some improvement in the rendering of the Nikon.

As for the sharpness, I’m very selective about my lenses and I mostly shoot with the better Fuji primes, so that’s not an issue for me, as the images look perfectly sharp straight out of the camera at +1 sharpening.

My favorite of the color profiles is Provia, but when I first started in the world of Fuji I was classic chrome all the way. Now, I like the improved vibrancy of Provia.

Still I feel this is the best camera I’ve ever owned, and technically this is a review of the camera, not a question.  😁

What part of flippy screen don't you get? Personally, heavier camera with ibis not required for my happiness. Gimbal not required, are you kidding? Check out past threads about this camera for tons more negative. But...as long as you are happy...:-)

I might be an outlier on this, but I actually prefer flippy screens. I came to Fuji from M4:3. My E-M5 Mark II and E-M1 Mark II bodies had flippy screens and I almost always carried and used the cameras with the screens flipped to the closed position. I don't chimp very often and keeping the screens closed let me focus on what I was photographing rather than what I had photographed.

I gladly accept a slightly heavier body for the inclusion of IBIS and a much better battery. I used small batteries in my E-P5 and E-M5 Mark II bodies. I was worried about the small batteries used in the X-T3 when I was thinking about moving to Fuji. The bigger (and better) batteries used in the X-T4 were a selling point. It would be a pain to have to get new chargers and batteries for existing Fuji users (as it was when Oly changed batteries in the E-M1 Mark II) but as someone new to Fuji it wasn't a concern for me.

I'm glad Fuji is offering users the options.

Ditto.  I don't use a flip screen flipped v.often, so a fully articulating screen isn't a big deal (though I prefer the flip screens the XT2/XH1 sported).  The IBIS & Battery update doesn't make the camera significantly larger (not compared to how large an XH1 feels in  hand).  IMO the XT4 is what I hoped the XH1 would have been.

One does wonder about the prevalence of Flip Screen Dependency Disorders.

Nice to hear such a ringing endorsement. I’m curious about exploring the screen articulation, as this is one of my main deal-breakers.

People keep saying a flip-out screen is better for video. How?? What does it allow for that a tilt-up/down/side hinge doesn’t allow for? Selfies are the only thing I can imagine. The flip-out can interfere with the cables, takes the eye away from the middle/lens of the camera, and if someone gets serious with video, don’t they use an external monitor anyway?

The flip-out justification feels mostly like tradition from old camcorders, which did it because the body didn’t allow for anything else. I have yet to hear a video person explain why this is better, unless they’re a vlogger.

Personally, I think the X100V style is perfect for run-and-gun b-roll video, if only it had stabilization. I hope Fuji eventually releases an X-Pro or X-E with IBIS and a tilt screen. And I think the X-T line already had the perfect screen. This one should’ve gone onto the X-H line, it it’s continued.

Just as well considering the D850 is a FF 45mp camera costing £1k more than the X-T4.

To the OP I 100% agree with everything in your review. Love my X-T4 and consider it a significant jump over the X-T3 (which I sold) and the X-T2 which I still own, fine cameras though both are. For my photography it’s the best camera I’ve owned, taking in its all round attributes and performance.

If you’re posting YouTube videos and the like, nope you do not need the external recorder and you do not need a gimbal.  With the X-T3, you would want both for that functionality.  Sorry that disappoints you, but doesn’t make it less true.  I’ve watched people use the dual mode IBIS with the primes on their YouTube channels, they didn’t use a Gimbal.

The flip screen is as useful as the other screen, it’s just useful in different ways, but that’s not an issue for me or many others.

Now as for the X-T4, I never said it was perfect, just the best camera I have ever owned / used.

I am curious about one thing – can it store White Balance Shift per custom profile? I know this seems minor but the other cameras can't do it and it's infuriating. Literally a leading reason I'm considering X-Pro3 and X100V.

As good as the X-T3 was, this is a significant upgrade, and I’m glad Fuji finally gave me the camera I wanted.

Cheers! Work that shutter out.

Yes, and in contrast, I would never swap my XT3 for this camera. To each their own:)

  • Really dislike articulating screens. XT3's was perfect
  • I do not want IBIS. Just don't trust floating mechanical bits with shutter shock vibration of floating parts occasionally looming it's ugly head. I like my sensor fixed in place:). Had enough unexplained occasional blur from OIS lenses (16-80, 18-55 and 15-45).

No, but I have used articulating screens before and find then incredibly annoying for stills. Just really like my XT3.  Would like the AF upgrades in my XT3, though.

My X-T3 was awesome in a lot of ways, and I’m not disparaging that body in anyway.

Yes it can mate...the only negative for me when deciding between xt3 and xt4 was the price (and xt4 doesn't come with charger!). Other than that it's an improvement in so many ways

Absolutly agree! No flippy screen! Keep my sensor fixed and more robust with less bits to screw up and expensive repair jobs!

Ohhhh yeaaahhhh good to know, thanks!

For the sake of the growing community of JPEG shooters trying various film recipes, I really hope this feature becomes 100% standard.
