CFexpress card runs HOT...like REALLY REALLY hot that you can't even hold it hot

Re: Switched from Hoodman to ProGrade

I only shoot stills. However, the Hoodman was very hot even just sitting in the Hoodman cardreader. The ProGrade did not have that issue.

Agree it’s always worth the extra for top cards

Yeah, I still have the Hoodman on my desktop, but I make sure to pop cards out as soon as I'm done. The Prograde is nice, though I recently replaced it in my travel kit with a Sabrent thunderbolt, which is just as fast. After a few years of very heavy use (I do a lot of card swaps during events), the springiness started wearing out on the ProGrade, so sometimes it would be difficult to eject my Prograde cards, because they fit flush against the front, and a Sandisk card I had would actually get stuck so I'd have to pry it out with a knife.

The Sabrent is smaller, and the card still protrudes to give a grip when inserted.

To be fair to Prograde, that was over 2 years of heavy use, but it's something to keep in mind.

I stopped using the Hoodman card and card reader. I switched to ProGrade card readers and ProGrade CFexpress cards (128gb). All of my excessive heat issues went away once I switched to ProGrade.

This could be because the ProGrade cards read slower than the Hoodman. I've measured 2 ProGrade CFexpress B cards (128 GB and 1 TB) in both ProGrade and Delkin readers, using Blackmagic Disk Speed Test and another app. The ProGrades read (and wrote) measurably slower than my Sony Tough and Delkin Green cards. Slower data transfer should result in lower card temperature.

The Hoodman card reader itself has this issue, with any card (the one I got a few years ago - to be fair, maybe they've fixed the issue since then).

If I put a card in the reader and leave it there (even if I "Eject" it from the operating system but leave it fully seated in the reader), then the card gets super hot and will keep running hot for no apparent reason. The other readers do still keep the card a little warm but nowhere near as hot as the Hoodman.

I went back and forth with Hoodman reps, and they were quite nice and responsive, and sent me a couple of other units to try, but all did the same thing. It may be unique to MacOS.
