OK, so I was way wrong about stacking.

Single frame, prepared for stacking

Stacked with x3 drizzle, scaled down to final output resolution

Final result after extra processing. I might have overdone it a bit, but was also curious how far I could push it.

Consider me impressed.

Side note: I would probably not bother trying if not for the fact that AutoStakkert!3 seems to be working perfectly fine under Linux using Wine.

its good to play with new functionality, even better to find it works as described

Great images! Sorry to ask this...when you say “stacking”...are you doing focus stacking?

Really good images. Just not sure of the terms you are using.

What's drizzle stacking x3.?

What extra processing did you do to the last image?

Thanks,

Great comparison between solo lens and lens + MC ! Especially the last two 100% images really show the resolution benefit of the lens + MC combo, check below

Seems like this really works!

Thanks,

Dizzle stacking x3 relates to enhancing the resolution by factor 3 (for both x and y) during the stacking process. This is an option in AutoStakkert 3 (and maybe other stacking softwares as well)

Last moon image was considerably sharpened and boosted in contrast. I find it excellent that way, not "overdone".

2nd image "focus stacking in camera", just set it to focus stacking and let the camera do its thing, including processing the image

Nice, but

but you'd have a more balanced composition if you used a longer lens and stood further away.

Unfortunately, this is not a good set of photos to do a comparison like this. As I mentioned, the seeing was horrible. You can have two images in a series, one after another and one will have one crater blurred a lot while the other will have a different one blurred. That level of air turbulence really messes things up. This is especially visible for smaller, fainter features which can almost completely disappear on some photos in the series.

How would I stand further away from this composition of the sky?

These are really nice shots. I think I will try tomorrow morning with our newly arrived 100-400 but I thought I was seeing Venus next to the moon this morning around 5am. ?

It would be difficult. With the recent cuts in the NASA budget, I guess the best option is to arrange an alien abduction or to find a huge selfie stick.
