EOS R5: External Battery USB-C Power
2

The EOS R5 has the capability to charge batteries via the USB-C port.  I keep a fully charged Anker USB-C Power Delivery (PD) battery pack with me to charge batteries in the field.  It would be great to be able to plug the camera in and use power straight from the external battery.  Is this a desired feature?

From what I read, is the camera will charge if powered off.   And you want to do that when not in use anyway to keep the camera cool.  But it won't power the camera.   Is all this true?

Canon claims for the R5 and R6:

“Ability to operate and shoot with the camera while charging with Power Adapter PD-E1 is possible.”

As opposed to the R and RP which are “charging only”.
Maybe your PD device isn’t powerful enough?

I should have been more clear.  I would like to be able to power the R5 using any USB-C PD charger and battery pack.  Not just using the overpriced Canon PD-E1 Adapter.

If the R5 can be powered with the PD-E1 adapter I'd assume as long as the specs of the power bank match the requirements it should work. As far as I'm aware, as long at the camera receives (enough) power it probably can't distinguish if it is via battery or wall adapter.

USB-C PD doesn't work that way. There are a huge varieties of voltages and amperages which a charger can provide, so your wish for "any" isn't going to happen, just as you can't power your laptop from "any" USB-C charger. I think it's too early for us to know what features the USB-C PD charger will need to support in order to support live power, but in my opinion, it's better to have a solution which provides charging/power at the same time, even if it means the camera draws from the battery as it charges. This way, if your cord is ever disconnected, the camera keeps working.

Does anyone with a PD-E1 care to share a photo of the back of the adapter or copy down the specs to see what output it has?

The Power Adapter PD-E1 requires a wall outlet. Great if you're in a studio setting but if you're out in public where there is no outlet, its useless.

I have the Anker PowerCore Slim 10000 PD, USB-C Portable Charger (18W), 10000mAh Power Delivery Power Bank and it will charge the LP-E6N when the camera is off. However, when I turn the camera on it does nothing. It stops charging the LP-E6N and doesn't not deliver power to the camera. Does your Anker power pack (Anker PowerCore+ 26800 PD) continue charging if the camera is on?

USB charging on the R5/R6 works by charging the battery when the camera is off and powering the camera ONLY when switched on. There must be a battery in the camera when powering via a power bank according to Canon

Nope, there must be a battery in the body.

or when battery is depleted ?

I have not checked this though I’d assume not given the need to have a battery in. It works with a nearly dead battery though so you might be able to turn it off and give the battery enough of a charge to get going.

3) Does it allow R5 to operate and charge battery at this same time ?

Nope, when it is powering the camera it is not recharging the battery.

It powers the camera, but does not charge the battery.

It does not appear to deplete the battery though I guess that that might vary depending on your use case. I just did a test where I recorded video for 20 minutes straight, with the rear screen turned on, and the battery remained at the same percentage.

Don't plug any power source into any ROUND ports on your R6. BIG - FLASH - GO - BOOM!

If you're talking about the elliptical USB-C port (actually a geometric "Stadium" shape), then you need a USB-C cable with PD capability. PD cables are special "chipped" cables, and are widely available.

Re: EOS R5: External Battery USB-C Power

Hi

The charging capabilities of Canon batteries are years out of date. A fact made worse by Canon mirrorless cameras being particularly heavy users of power.

Phones with large batteries charge in about an hour with USB C high speed charging. Not available for charging Canon batteries. Why not? Canon chargers are still very old micro USB.

You can plug in a USB C power pack to your Canon camera and as long as it is switched off (i.e. not being a camera) it will charge! Who at Canon thought that was a good plan? Surely a power pack should allow us to use the camera for hours? The fastest I have charged a battery is still over 5 hours; unacceptable. It's particularly unacceptable as on a cool UK day with settings set to low power (except I do always use the viewfinder) I get as few as 170 shots from a genuine Canon R5 battery.

Thanks for reading.
