RF 24-70/2.8: Variable ND + Lens Hood Solution

I picked-up a variable ND filter for my RF 24-70/2.8 but I cannot use my lens hood with it. Are there any good solutions for having both?

Any advice appreciated. Thanks

You mean that yu can't adjust the VND while the hood is on, or you can fit the hood back over the filter?

Hi Dave,

The latter. The filter itself is too big to fit the hood over, and the filter will not drop and thread into place with the hood on.

What brand of filter? I have had that problem with a particular brand.

I'm using the B+W:

That is interesting; I have never had a problem like that with B+W filters. However, when I use my Breakthrough X4 filters, I also cannot replace the hood. This is not the norm, and its unfortunate that these two have not accounted for the hood in their designs.

Just to confirm: you are using the same filter size as the threads on the lens, correct? Not using a step-up ring?

I have not found a solution or workaround. I simply cannot use a hood when using these filters, and there are cases where I really need the hood, so that limits the usefulness of the filters.

Correct. No step up ring. 82mm filter mated to an 82mm filter thread lens.

Can you try a different 82mm filter to test it?

Hi Dave,

The latter. The filter itself is too big to fit the hood over, and the filter will not drop and thread into place with the hood on.

The issue here is the the B+" 82mm Vario ND filter has a front filter thread of 86mm. In fact, all B+W vario ND filters have front threads that are one step wider than the filter threat on the lens side. This matters when you want to put a lens cap on the vario ND. And apparently, it may also interfers with a lens hood.

Thanks, @JoWinter. Yes, this became readily apparent after getting the filter The larger filter diameter results in interference -- my bad for not paying closer attention when ordering.

That said,  any good solutions/recommendations for a 82mm variable ND (lens facing) that doesn't preclude attaching hood?

No idea. I think searching retailer websites such as BHs for the 82mm size and then looking at the description might be the best way to go. The few that I've just looked at all have larger front threads. Getting a new 86mm hood might be cheaper (but who knows whether there will be vignetting).

I ordered a polarpro. AFAICT, looks like it should work. Thanks!

What is the diameter of the Variable ND that you own (Not the thread size, the actual casing). For example, I have the Tiffen @ 97mm actual diameter (I had to measure with a caliper, as the stat isn't listed anywhere I could find).

I see from other posts that you use the B&W. It is 86mm.

I think I have a solution for you, as I believe you have inadvertently solved mine.

I bought the newly released Smallrig MINI MatteBox. You can stack both screw on, 4x4, or 4x5.65 filters. My problem is that the Tiffen is too big. It has to be under 95mm to fit. It appears that the B&W fits. I used mine today with a smaller lens and smaller ND and it was legend! I purchased the MatteBox direct from Smallrig and it weirdly got here from China in about a week (not a month, lol). Not a spam or an ad. Bought mine for $79. Reg price $99. B&H has them too I think.

Interesting to see this old thread bumped. After I've got the RF 70-200 f/4 I totally understand what you mean. With the hood in the reverse position my B+W Vario ND simply cannot thread into place. This EW-83H hood is my solution.

You may try the hood from some old lenses, like the EF 16-35mm f/2.8 II USM. It would take some trials and errors though.
